In this case, IIRC an alternative route has been considered, but that route lead through more populated areas where a spill would endanger more people.
Personally, I would have them route the bloody thing right down Main Street of the cities and towns because they would then be absolutely certain to build and maintain the pipeline correctly or risk going out of business in a flurry of lawsuits if a break occurred. I say this having lived less then 1 mile from the NoVa pipeline complex where pipes did burst while we lived nearby. One was a high pressure natural gas line which vented to the atmosphere but fortunately did not ignite. Odd whooshing sound, though.

    Now three days, Sat-Mon:
    1. Georgia is going dry rapidly.
    2. North Carolina and Tennessee next.
    3. South Carolina and Virginia not so bad, yet.

Terrible !!! gas may actually go back up to what ... $2.95 ?? oh the humanity
    o_O
Yea, any major fuel line rupture is horrible ... but prices? It's so undervalued right now it's not even funny. At least when there's a "solar panel" spill (off the back of the delivery truck) ... the worst thing may be a few flats & a couple rear-enders.

And a "solar spill" is called "a sunny day". We need more of those...

We could use more rain here.
And California's "solar spill" is serious problem.

Could combine three stops in 15 miles so I went out today. A/C off. Fortunately, I had only 100 miles used out of a full tank so I figure, with nothing long range planned for a week, by then things will be back to normal. Lots less traffic, fewer cars at every stop and the local super WalMart was comparatively deserted at 10 on a Monday. Glad I don't own a business.

Passed three gas stations, no gas.

Stray thoughts...will this help higher MPG vehicle sales? And how do the dealers deliver a new car with a full tank?

Gas in chicago area went up $0.25 today. Nowhere near the pipeline break and we have our own refineries. Have I ever mentioned I hate big oil?

It is an excellent test case. But I think we've seen this pattern on the West coast, California in particular. There was a year or so when there was at least one California refinery after another down for "accident" or "repairs" or "exporting gas."

I went out and wallowed in one of those 'solar spills' today, up to a mountain peak with a view. There won't be many of those left around here this year.

Figuring some locally might try to profit on it, I filled up @ $1.77/gal two days after the news broke and that should last till next spring. (y)

They don't. New owner will receive a voucher for more gas.

Hope you took the proper precautions; solar is a known carcinogen.

    My anti-carcinogenic solar prevention procedure goes like this ;
Sunblock # 50 while on the roof - washing the pv panels . . . + they're washed at the crack of dawn - so I'm not getting water spots OR getting over heated.

They say the pipeline may be fixed today ...they built a temporary loop around the leak area.

But in the interest of national gasoline supply, I had my wife fill-up in New Jersey so Virginia demand would be less one Prius fill-up. Of course she was on empty anyways.

Nothing changed around here, no price changes, no lines and no closings. Now, that's just in my driveway, but it didn't change out there on the roads, either. Did anyone here encounter any problems?

You made your DW drive to New Jersey to refuel your Prius?
    Wow.
I would never try that with my little Panzer battalion for fear she would build a temporary or permanent loop around me!
