I have had this problem with my other two Priuses, unfortunately my 2016 did it for the first time on Wednesday.

I took a 5 hour round trip to take my mother-in-law to the airport. Almost home, the gas light came on. It was the first time that I saw the gaslight, and the indicator suggested that I had 25 miles left. So I pulled into a Sam's and marked my mileage, around 2500 miles, then added gas. I was able to get about 3 gallons in before it clicked.

Knowing that I had a busy rest of the week, and not wanting to have to refill it later, I tried pretty hard to get it to take more gas. I change the angle of the nozel, but it just wasn't having it. Sometimes that would work with my 2005 or my 2010 Prius...

I was hoping that Toyota would have found a way to fix this, but no biggie I still love the car.

Does it help to pump slower? I never had that problem with my 2004 Prius (can't speak for my 2016 since today was my first fill up), but I had a finicky Chrysler years back with that problem. Too bad I live in one of those states where I can not pump my own fuel so I had to cajole the attendant to try harder to get a true fill.

I wish we understood what makes the tank think it's full. I just speculate maybe you had winter fuel with higher vapor pressure, maybe a warmer day? So the pressure in the tank faked out the sensors. Just speculating.

Is there a hiss noise when you turn the gas cap ?

Is the gas cap different on 2016? I heard something, maybe Wayne Gerdes grumbling when he was testing one?

    Addendum:

Must have been another car Wayne was reviewing, sorry.

i have never had this problem, 2004, 8 and 12. i have to wonder what is happening when someone has it continually. i don't think toyota has recognized a problem since gen 2 bladder.

Before I start blaming the car, I would look at the pump. The pump at my Safeway is always stopping short. I've filled up with 3 different cars and get the same thing. The trick with filling slowly doesn't work. I think the low price gas station entices you to shop Safeway but they don't really want to sell you cheap gas. They make the pump more sensitive so that you have to come back more often. That's my conspiracy theory anyway. o_O

I didn't notice one, but I wasn't paying attention. What could this indicate?

With my 2005, pumping slower did seem to help. I can't remember if this came up with my 2010, I think the 2010 handled it much better. But i still recall it happening.

I made the same drive yesterday, 2.5 hours, and this time stopped at Costco on the way home, and it filled up without issue. It might be a combination of the pump and the car. :) Although, the tank was only half empty at Costco, it was pretty close to empty at Sams.

In Germany the pistol at the gas station has several hooks which allow for different positions, more inside or less inside. At the maximum I have the same problems with my P2. One hook lees and it works nearly perfect.

Well my wife just called and had the same thing happen to her on the new Prius. She got like $3 in it and then it wouldn't take anything else no matter what she tried. Told her to put the cap back on and drive to another pump and try again. Then it decided to let her fill it up. Weird.

I had the problem last week in California with a rental Cruze. The fix there was the special "accordian" nozzle needs to be inserted far enough into the tank to get the pump to work.

Then there's the occasional nozzle that just won't shut off at all.

Just did my first fill up when getting to the 1 bar mark, and the fuel pump clicked off after only filling up about 3 gallons. I was really confused, but I knew it was a bladder bag, so I just drove off and figured I'd see if the bag settled. The meter bars showed about half full. I drove about a mile to the next gas station closer to home, and was able to get 6 more gallons in, and the meter was at full bars.

It was a humid but sunny evening in the mid 80s after storming all day.

There's one pump near here which did that to me, the flow from the pump was too fast, and I slowed it down a bit and it worked fine.

The Gen 4 has no Bladder Bag (nor did Gen 3).

Huh, now I'm wondering where I read about the bladder bag. Been taking in so much info lately.

This made me look up how gas pumps know when to shut off. never thought about it before

Gen 2 had a bladder bag - which worked fine most of the time from what I read, but could be a bit problematical other times. I think it was to save the environment, but ended up not working as well as the designer thought.

That's very strange. I've never had that happen, with any vehicle, in 45 years of driving.

And my Prius has been fine so far.
