.....hmm....7 cm may be less impact on cargo space than we've been thinking all along.
Did we have a units of measure problem?

If the Prime doesn't have a spare tire, the rear space should be compared with the Eco with the sunken floor.

7cm = 2.8" (We've been saying ~3" based on the phone widths because nobody brought a measuring tape to NY).

that's what i thought. 2.8" is a huge loss in height, cubic feet is less important.

Not so sure about that, those plastic grocery bags aren't as tall as the old paper ones... ;)

May not be able to stick a bicycle inside anymore, but I could never get both of ours in anyway. a ladder can lay flat. I think it really won't make all that much difference in the long run, things can be rearranged to a point. If that 2.8 inches really matters (do NOT ask the wife about it), maybe that item should be moved in a rented truck?

and then deduct the height of the spare tyre sitting on top of the battery.

My spare tire, uhh the car's spare tire, goes on the floor behind the front seat. I never have anybody in the back anyway.

Never mind the lack of a 5th seat, not being able to put my bike inside would be my deal-breaker :(.

Well the rear seats fold down and it's similar (if not the exact same) height as the Gen 4. Therefore, there's a slope downwards from the higher cargo floor to the rear seat back. You should still be able to fit a bike since the handlebar goes in first and you still have the height due to the lower rear seatbacks (when folded) and the rear wheel/gear sits in the cargo area.

Just be aware of the cloth headliner. It's a bit more susceptible to damage than the old "mousefir" type used on all previous Prii.

According to that article, it says it's a 40% weight reduction. (so based on your estimates, the CFRP hatch will be 6-9 pounds)

Figuring out the cargo capacity isn't rocket science. I simply found a 3" tall box and put it in the back to see if that made much of a difference with what I routinely transport. It didn't. My bags and backpack aren't that big The bike isn't either. The cooler never fit with the cover unrolled anyway. So, height is a non-issue.

True, I will find a squeeze on rare occasions, like the patio table we purchased this spring. But then again, I could have easily just rented the pickup there at the hardware store if I truly needed it. Delivery for one-time purchases like that is always an option too. The requirement is usually length. Will I still be able to transport long cargo, like new shelves. The answer is yes.

Assumingly, the massive amount of yard-waste I cut from our pond's edge last month that needed transport to the compost will still fit just fine. It was an absurd sight driving a plug-in Prius into that place. One of the guy's driving a dump truck filled with old branches went out of his way to stop and yell out: "Wow! That's dedication." upon seeing it.

I'll be glad when I get my Prime... hopefully soon, so some of this speculation can be put to rest. It reminds me of what people speculated about way back with gen-2 Prius, when the hatchback model was introduced.

The following piece came from .... Inside EV's

    "Toyota Prius Plug-In:

Whoosh – is the sound of Prius PHV sales as the remaining inventory circles the drain. It is all over. See you in late 2016 as the all-new Toyota Prius Prime hits the market (full details).

For most of the year, Toyota was lucky that the Mitsubishi i-MiEV was still officially on the market, because otherwise the Prius PHV would have found itself at the very bottom of the plug-in sales charts for 2016. But that has changed in August…as the plug-in Toyota is now in dead last.

After setting a 2016 high for Prius PHV sales in June …at just 11 units, sales regressed to just 2 cars in August (we really aren’t sure where these last stragglers are coming from actually). Overall 48 have moved in 2016, off just a scant 99.4% from the 3,818 sold in the first 8 months of 2015.

That being said, if the Prius Prime actually arrives with some time left in 2016, the company could still end the year with a bunch of sales on the book, as the new 22 mile Prius plug-in is expected to compete for the sales crown in 2017.

However, in June we tracked down Toyota’s plant information and found out the Prius Prime enters retail production this September (and more recently there as been some issues with the fabrication of the Prime-specific rear hatch)…so our new hunch is that it will not be available in any depth, anywhere until closer to Christmas.

Some industry insiders think upwards of 50,000 could be sold during its first full year on the market in 2017…provided that Toyota decides to fully stock it (but we think they will)."

I took them. Like all else Prius related, patience.

Right now, I'm busy filming. Currently, I've got 3 new drive captures waiting to be edited.

The hatch window in my 2010 doesn't have a big curve but it isn't flat. When I laid a straight-edge across it, I found that it curves down about 1" to each side, about 1/2" to the front and the back, and about 1 1/2" from corner to corner

Thanks! I've never actually taken a straight-edge to my rear window but it certainly is a lot flatter than the Gen 2 which had a noticeably curved window.

I had put down $1000 a few days after the New York autoshow with hope that it would be a November delivery. But I just got word from my local dealership that it has been delayed until March 2017
