Quick hello to the forum members from a TDI convert. Still own the 2012 Golf TDI I bought new in September 2012. After news of the buyback I began looking for a replacement. I do plan to be one of the first people at the door to sell back to VW.

The experience with the TDI has been positive after 113,000 miles. I've only had to perform regular maintenance and replace one wheel bearing in the 4 years of ownership. MPGs have averaged low 40s in the winter to nearly 50 in the warmer months. My commute for the last 18 months has been 125 miles round trip. With no change in the near future, not to mention my addiction to high MPGs, I knew I'd be looking for a hybrid.

I test drove hybrids from Hyundai, Ford, and Toyota. Initially considering a sedan. I had thought I'd settled on the Hyundai Sonata Plug-in (nearly $5k tax break and work offers a $4,000 one time "bonus" to buyers of plug-ins), however, after driving the sonata and seeing for myself how small the trunk was I couldn't pull the trigger.

I'll spare you all the rest of the story and say that after weighing depreciation of a new vehicle with my long commute, desire for a reasonable payment, and need for stellar reliability I purchased a 2013 CPO Prius Two.

Having only had the car for 5 whole days I can not yet report a full tank of mileage, though I doubt I'll be disappointed!

Been mildly eyeing the used car market in my area.

The interesting thing to me, is I think used Volkswagens are a good purchase right now.

You have to be willing to get past the fact that you own a vehicle from a company that was allegedly overtly willing to defraud the public and misrepresent their vehicles. BUT....if you turn an intellectual and emotional blind eye to that reality? (Hard Pill To Swallow) Then at least in my area, some very nice Volkswagens are selling for far, far less than their Pre-Scandal cost.

I always have liked Volkswagens.....it's nearly tempting to me to buy low. Before the scandal, I think Volkswagen had a reputation on a par, or even possibly exceeding that of Toyota or Honda as far as fit, finish and build quality.
Assuming the only problem, is that the emissions might not be as clean as originally reported...maybe I could live with that?

    No...no...probably not.

But I do think Volkswagen produced some nice vehicles.
They just evidently weren't "quite" as nice as they lead people to believe.

Coming from a TDI to a Prius, you must be really missing the torque from the diesel?

It's probably a good idea to get rid of the TDI before the high pressure fuel pump fails. It used to be a relatively common high ticket repair item when the cars went out of warranty.

Welcome aboard Virginia...looks like my white Prius in the foreground of your photo, and my white minivan in the background.

PS- that's amazing $4000 employer discount! Imagine if you lived in DC or lesser extent MD you get Fed+state+employer incentives, and you would not have to pay VA annual car taxes. You'd be $10000 ahead with the Sonata.

This is what I am saying about VA, our car tax promotes buying used car vs. newer greener car. In your case you went "green" with a used Prius, but the state and dealer lost out on a new car sale.

Good luck with the Prius! It's hard to get as much cargo space as a Gen3 Prius has. Really tops there unless you go up to v wagon.

I'm from a tdi also. I had a 2002 sedan, but quickly realized I needed more room.
I bought a 2003 jetta wagon, drove it for ten years and about 235,000 miles.
    I sold it in 2013, bought a 2013 sportwagon.
I never was I love with the 2013 like I was with the 03.
The 03 was manual, I liked it much better than the 13 dsg. Also, the 03 had real leather.. I never liked the fake leather in the 13.
The final straw was the emissions scandal. I was po'd at vw.
Traded in the 13 on a 2015 prius v. I love the v, my dogs have never had such a large vehicle.

The change in torque has been something to get used to. Though the Prius isn't nearly as slow when floored as it feels otherwise.

And yes, glad to have the TDI gone before the HPFP trys to clear out my savings. I've read on the TDI forum of that repair alone costing thousands. No thanks! Glad to be back with Toyota.

It's all relative, TDI has HPFP, and hybrids have high voltage traction battery and inverter to worry about when they're out of warranty.
