    Thanks for the interesting snow report, Don. And it brings up a question in my mind. I have no experience driving in that kind of Winter conditions, and I always wondered if the Prius has enough power to maneuver through a reasonable amount of snow. But apparently, it does just fine? Aside from the mpg hit, of course.

    I look at it as a learning tool, Kevin. Like Don's post above. I like hearing from you veterans with long experience. That's good information to know, especially for a first-time Prius owner like myself. We can learn from the worst-case scenarios, and be more prepared on what to expect out of our Prius.

    When driving long distances in inclement weather, or mountainous regions, or in extremely hot temperatures, and/or when hauling extra passengers, might it be wise for a new owner to top off their tank a little more frequently than usual? At least until they (and especially ME) learn more about the mpg performance of their Prius. I appreciate all the contributions from everybody. :)

    (And I don't think 35-40 mpg is bad at all! Especially in those harsh conditions. My Camry only got 17 under sunny skies! :ROFLMAO:)

    I have never had a serious problem in snow with either my '04 or my '10 Prii. I do use Blizzak snows on all 4 wheels and that helps a bunch. Steady speed, not too fast and avoid the brakes and the car does fine.

    Well you had to get all technical on me... ;). I was drove using CC at +3 over the posted limit. (Phone GPS indicates that the car spedo is 1mph low.)

    49.8 mph calculated by hand.

    I filled up in Denver, drove to Casper, Wyoming did a bit of running around town, then back to Cheyenne, Wyoming where I filled up. Distance driven was 484 miles. I was doing pretty good in Colorado, speed limit is 75 but traffic kept me slower than that. In Wyoming the speed limit is 80 and I was able to maintain that almost the entire time, maybe got scraped off on a trucker a time or two but no serious slow downs. Had a pretty terrible cross wind as well. When I get asked by friends about my gas milage I always tell them the worst I got was 49.8 and it "pissed me off." Truly I'm quite pleased with it, all things considered.

    Your Gen IV Prii are really making me jealous of those numbers.

    My worst tank with this Gen II was 34.80 calculated, 35.2 on the screen. For over two weeks the car was used in super short (<3 miles) hops multiple times a day. Less than a mile to work, park it for 2 hours, less than a mile home, run our daughter 2.5 miles to school. Afternoon was less than a mile to work, park for an hour, go pick up our daughter from school, then back home. Throw in short hops to the market and doctor appointments and for over two weeks the car never got on the freeway. It was very rarely over 40 mph. The final part of that tank was climbing Cajon Pass (5,000+ ft.) with the air conditioning on and then filling it up on the high desert. That tank was about as bad as it can get.

    I got better mileage running the mountains of Utah at 80 mph in 100* heat with the air on.

    That really surprises me, as I thought even the earlier Prius was made for and would be ideal for "short hop" driving. That's another one of the main reasons I bought one... thinking that the half gas/half electric would do great on all the short drives I take. So far, fortunately, the Gen4 has been excellent in those duties.

    The Gen II wasn't actually designed for that. It's great as a stop and go commuter but not when you have to keep turning it on and off. The ICE kicks on every time the car is turned on. Add to that the fact that the car never has a chance to properly warm up and you can kiss good mileage (for a Prius) goodbye. It's at its very best when it can be driven steadily between about 40 and 55 with at least 5 or 6 miles to start..

    34 mpg, Texas Blue Northern.. 30+ mph head wind... boy was that 2004 Prius whipped all over the road...

    Filled up this week - hand calc was 52.7, display said 54.8 or something similar. This was after the road trip with approx. 140 mi of terrible freeway mileage, otherwise it would have been higher for sure.

    Switching to PWR mode per Coast Cruiser and will report back on next tank. It will be higher, I'm sure.

    I didn't begin using PWR mode until my car had nearly 3,000 (break-in) miles.

    I didn't get a huge increase in mpg after switching to PWR mode. (I want to be clear about that.) It was only about +2. Regardless of which mode I use, I always average 60-62 mpg from a full tank; city driving.

    The main reason I remain in PWR, is because I enjoy (and prefer) the better "feeling" and performance I get from my Prius. If I was only getting 50 mpg, I would still prefer driving in PWR mode.

    Switched to PWR mode. So far my report is:
    1. Wow, it's sensitive!!
    2. Got 70.3mpg on my 15 mi commute home. Pretty dang good!

    And, I only meant that I'm sure the next tank will be better because I won't have that bad road trip bringing down the average. Plus, I feel like there is a learning curve, and we are only getting better at driving this thing. Logged about 1,400 mi so far.

    It's kind of odd, but after 2 or 3 weeks driving in the PWR mode, my gas pedal became less sensitive, and feels pretty normal now after a couple months. (I believe the computer adjusts to your driving.) But I still get the better "unrestricted" performance that I enjoy. Eco mode just feels so sluggish to me... and I had to mash down on the pedal too hard.

    My MPG's are still holding at 60-61. Pretty much just stays there, regardless of what mode its in. But 90% of my driving is in the city. I still need to test it on a long freeway drive. (The longest freeway trip I took was only 73 miles... and the display showed 67mpg, in PWR mode, at 70-75 mph. I need to do about 300 miles and see what I get.)

    Heavy rain at 60-65MPH will push you close to the low 50's or high 40's. I always slow down anyway so I have never seen anything below the mid 50s for a 100-400 mile check. 57 MPG driving 65 with cruise on and a full load/my last trip. Cruise can kill MPG but I have to use it since the seats aren't perfect.

    Gen 3 was probably 44 MPG with rain at 65MPH.
