We need more, Don. How many miles does your 06 have? How bad is bad? 35 mpg? Has the HV battery ever been replaced? If your HV battery is original, the following applies Generally speaking, you will notice other issue in addition to the bad fuel economy. One is that the ICE will run more often and not shut off at stops as it once did. Another is the SOC gauge on the MFD will fluctuate from purple to green more frequently. If you have either of these, the HV battery is getting weak and will get weaker still until you'll get the red triangle of death and other warning lights on the dashboard. If and when that happens you will need to scan for codes and more often than not you'll get a P0A80 and/or P3011-P3024 codes.
If you do really short trips under 5 miles or run AC on max it can reduce fuel economy. Let the car warmup for 5 minutes, then reset the mpg stats and drive for 30 miles at 62-65mph cruse set and see what MPG u get. Try to set the AC so the fan speed shows the lowest or next lowest setting. (78 degrees)
Don's tires would need to be worn to the rims to reduce fuel economy, b. Driving with worn tires actually increases mpg. But you knew that. You're just being snarky here, aren't you, since Don doesn't have much to say except "what's wrong". And he started another identical thread. I hope I'm not that lost at 88. Still 29 years away for me fortunately.
I am still unsere why the OP asked almost the same thing twice but this one I can answer. No. There are many things that might be wrong with your 2006, one of which (say 5% of the cases) is the HV Battery. the other cases are almost all cheaper. When was the last time you replaced the 12 volt battery? When was the last time you had a wheel Alignment? How inflated are your tires? Is your engine being maintained? (oil and filter, air filter, PVC filter, spark plugs, etc.) Is the car acting different? (besides lower MPG) Are you driving more or less on some new route? Your answers to our questions may indeed point to the HV Battery, but nothing you have told us so far does. Fuel economy complaints/queries? Do you recall his first and only post of this thread? He said his Prius has bad mpg but won't or can't say how bad. Some hypermiling fanatics would consider a 3% decrease devastating while an average car owner might consider a 33% hit troublesome. Who knows where Don is. Once Don wakes up from his third nap of the day and reads the two threads he started, maybe we'll get a response. Until then, I'm going to conclude he has some reason to suspect its the HV battery - the car is 10 years old after all.
Hahaha! Isn't he sleeping when he took his avatar picture? It's just an old car with an old battery. Mine is showing signs of wear. e.g. 39 MPG
Just got a 2007 how to tell which model and if battery has been changed. I buy cars at police auctions 69k on this one I like it but can't figure out how to get the alarm to work. After locking doors with with fob or door lock, I reach in unlock and Nada. Any suggestions are most welcome. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
