If you take liberal to mean free thinker or music lover, then I'd say yes. For your interlude, I give you Dvorak.

There is vegan makeup. I'm lazy so I hardly wear makeup. People still think I'm younger than I look so I'll take that (I even got carded recently and that boat sailed long, long ago)

And I know this thread is totally off the rails at this point but..

There are entire bakeries dedicated to vegan baked goods, including donuts, cupcakes, pastries and other things. I went vegan initially because I found myself not wanting to eat meat, I had no inclination to be vegetarian but at the point that I was forcing myself to eat anything with meat, I figured I had to do something. So I started looking into vegetarian and vegan nutrition. I was a cheese lover but something I read said 'just try a vegan diet for a couple weeks', so I did and I liked it. The smell of eggs and dairy is pretty unpleasant at this point but I've been doing it for 8 years.

For me, I learned about a lot of different foods and cooked things I would've never cooked if I hadn't become vegan. Lots of various veggies, legumes and grains that weren't part of my life and it helped me explore ethnic foods that I hadn't explored previously. And then there is the leather issue but I figured at the beginning that if I wasn't going to eat animals, I wasn't going to wear them. Also decided against buying products tested on animals or with animal products in them.

What are you Zojja... all of 26??? :)

When I was 54 or 55 and just retired, lots of people commented that I didn't look anywhere near 55 yrs old!

Ah, yes, those were the GOOD ol' days. :D But that ocean liner sailed 8 years ago! I'm 62. Now people say, "Gee, you look good for 75!"

    OMG!!!! :(

I'd bet this is not the only strange statement he's made. If so, then it's just one person.

I have seen a lot of videos of factory farming and it would lend to Paul McCartney's quote: "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, we would all be vegetarians." But I'm more of an advocate of moderating meat intake, which would still make a big difference in animal welfare. Temple Grandin has done a lot to make slaughterhouse less brutal, but so much more needs to be done. The root problem is like business in general trying to get the last penny of profit....if the slaughter lines were slowed a bit, the process would be significantly less horrific. The public has to be willing to pay a little more for their meat.

Life seems short... and it sure goes by FAST sometimes. I can't imagine being 62 already! Where did the years go??! Everybody I worked with said the same thing... and my sisters and parents said the same thing. It's very strange. (I can't believe I can apply for social security next year! If I want. Seems so Weird. I still act like a big kid sometimes... Don't know if that's good or bad; But I refuse to become an old, bitter, grumpy dude!)

Honest questions here.... How is produce, especially organic produce, vegan? My understanding is organic produce uses manure and bone meal as fertilizer. Neither of those can truly be considered vegan, can they?

    Also.... what about honey?

I don't have to deal which such philosophical concerns as I'm doing it for health reasons; mainly to greatly reduce cholesterol.

Honey might be a sticky issue (see what I did there?). :) I now personally greatly prefer blue agave as a sweetener.

I always thought that, at a BBQ, the beef and pork was for meat eaters and fish and chicken were served for vegetarians. What am I missing?

    A lower LDL. ;)

"Although some fats are healthy, you need to limit the saturated and trans fats you eat. Saturated fats, like those in meat, butter, cheese and other full-fat dairy products, and some oils, raise your total cholesterol. Trans fats, often used in margarines and store-bought cookies, crackers and cakes, are particularly bad for your cholesterol levels. Trans fats raise LDL cholesterol, and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the "good" cholesterol."

Cholesterol: Top foods to improve your numbers - Mayo Clinic

I now limit my meat consumption to twice a year: once at our large family reunion where Texas's best BBQ is served and secondly a juicy ribeye on our wedding anniversary dinner. A lifestyle compromise that works for me. (y)

I knew many friends and family that avoided all beef because of the cholesterol and fat... but they still enjoyed fish, chicken, and turkey. Sounds very reasonable. (I don't eat much beef, actually. But I can sure dig into a nice grilled whole chicken!)

Then there's the true, 100% vegetarians that don't eat any meats... No beef / pork / foul / or fish. All veggies, all the time, with maybe some nuts and grains? Certainly very healthy.

Vegans? I'm still not sure I understand, specifically, what they enjoy eating. One website I looked at, said it was related to the protection of animals and the environment? Not having anything to do with animal-based food or products, and avoiding all chemicals?

I'm sure not one to judge. With all the crap & junk I've consumed, I'm extremely lucky I made it to 62! :ROFLMAO:

And now this big old dude is driving a PRIUS??? Who would have thunk it!! To each his/her own, and happy motoring to all! :D

I don't know about bone meal, but from my understanding it is illegal to use manure as fertilizer due to the risk of disease. A quick read shows that actually plant matter is usually composted to create fertilizer.

And honey is not considered a vegan product but some people eat it and call themselves vegan. I never ate honey prior to being vegan so it wasn't something I was going to add in after.

Don't get me started about 'chemicals'. Those aren't vegans, those are just woo followers.

As for vegans, they eat a variety of things and obviously everyone is different but generally a vegan diet consists of anything that comes from plants so fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds and their derivatives. So tofu is mentioned, although I don't eat much tofu, but it is a derivative of a bean. Seitan, which is a derivative of wheat, is also an example of something popular among vegans and vegetarians.

I'm fairly simple. For breakfast, I usually have hummus on toast with sliced tomatoes. I also usually have a piece of fruit with that. Some other times I'll have muesli with soy milk.

My lunches and dinners are very similar because I tend to eat leftovers but I can give an example of things I've made recently:
(Our 100 degree weather has put me in a soup mood somehow)
    1) Lentil soup with lots of veggies (carrots, zucchini, celery, spinach), usually eaten with bread
    2) A potato/bean/kale soup, based on a Portuguese soup
    3) Red Posole (A spicy soup with hominy, and mushrooms, served with veggies as condiments and corn tortillas)
    4) Cold asian style noodle salad with tofu (basically rice noodles, cubed marinated tofu, carrots, lettuce, green onions, peanuts with a spicy peanut sauce)
    5) Tortilla soup (spicy soup with corn and beans and topped with crumbled tortilla chips)
    6) Refried beans, brown rice and tortillas. I usually add a steamed veg here too like zucchini and salsa of course.

Other things I tend to rely on are things like Indian and Ethiopian style dishes because those tend to have really good legume based dishes that are naturally vegan (other than ghee which may be used in Indian cooking, I usually use coconut oil). So things like Chana Masala on top of basmati rice is a pretty standard dinner.

That was the point I meaning to make but really didn't when I mentioned the former co-worker who didn't look her age. Many folks don't realize our skin is our largest organ and diet will greatly affect its look and feel.

Are male Prius drivers required to "manscape?"
