My friend just texted me and said they put in 2 gallons of the middle octane gas in my 2016 Prius 2. The recommended fuel is the cheaper octane (lowest).....how bad is this? Also worth noting, this is only the 2nd time gas has been put in the car. Dealer put in the first tank.

No problem...just stay clear of the diesel fuel that is the only thing that is really bad

If you're using the odometer to track mileage, just hang onto the gas receipt, and next fillup, just lump it all together. If you're relying on trip meter, and it was reset without being recorded, you might still be able to sleuth out distance since last fill up, the car does retain a record of trip meter resets I believe. Vee haf weys...

This is the primary reason I tank up whenever it's below half full.

Personally I only track mpg, don't want to think about the $'s.

I almost grabbed the diesel nozzle last time I filled up. Shell stations have 2 nozzles on each pump. The diesel should be on a separate pump. I imagine many people make that mistake.

Thanks Mendel. I asked the GF to text me the odometer miles and the location where she got gas.

I'd be more concerned with what the dealer put in the tank... ;)

The thing wrong with diesel is near-zero octane, so go with Premium to blend it up if it happens

Don't rely on the pump handle color. I came across a post from someone in FL saying that green is not gas and black is diesel at some stations. I think that may also be the case across the pond. Just pay attention.

That would certainly be annoying to those driving diesels unless the station is big enough to give them their own island. A couple of stations around me have just one pump that has diesel on it. Of course that pump is always being used by a gasser for some reason so I have to sit there and wait for them to finish. They look at me like I'm the jackass. So sorry a 1 ton takes diesel, now hurry up and finish filling up your tin box.

A Valero near me has yellow for gas, green for diesel. I often do a double take thinking I grabbed the E85 handle.

once along time a go I was filling up a car... the Shell rep. came running out yelling you are putting diesel in that car.... I yell back I sure hope so,,,, it has a diesel ice...

In the Prii about every 25000 mile I put in prem grade that has the extra cleaners to help keep the fuel system cleaner. seems to hlep.. or it is my mind playing tricks on my wallet :ROFLMAO:

You can't pump diesel into a gasser, the nozzle will not fit into the hole!

Everything I've read says that the premium and the regular has the same detergent mix. The biggest difference is between a top tier brand and a brand that isn't. There's differences between top tier as well, but it's not as significant. Just look for a top tier station and pump the octane your car requires in the manual. although to be honest, the 2016 manual says 87 octane, regular here is 85 octane, after some discussions here, emails to Toyota, and finally a conversation with an Exxon rep, I put 85 in it, seems fine. A station in the middle of nowhere a few weeks ago was out of everything but premium (91 octane here) so that was my choice. It also made no difference in gas milage, or perceivable power, or ease of starting despite what another thread suggested.

Like everyone else said, you'll be fine. (I think 89 is just the pump blending 87 and 91 on site, right? I don't think there's actual 89 gas sitting in a tank cause barely any car requires it.. just a couple of late 90s/early 2000s GM cars)

Well if you drove a normal number of km, you might want to. Compared to the a 4 cylinder Camry, you're saving quite a bit. (almost half the cost)

I'd be surprised if you can put diesel in - the nozzles these days are optimised to the inlet of the car to prevent misfuelling - at least my last couple of cars were.
