Suit says '13-mile' range for Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid was deceptive

mine absolutely does not work that way.

let's analyze the statement: if i want to drive, say 5 miles, if i tap the accelerator just a tiny bit hard from a stop light, the engine starts'.

two things here; you pretty well have to mash it to start the engine. it hasn't happened to me in 44,000 miles of driving, and 28,000 of that in ev.

secondly, you can watch the hsi if you want to accelerate hard, and keep the bar out of the power zone. the engine will not start.

i'm not saying it can't start, but let's not pretend a slight tap on the go pedal is this world ending problem.
that's a disservice to toyota's engineer's, who did a fantastic job with this car.

edit: i have not tried it in power mode, which may take less pedal pressure/travel.

I have and while it takes less go pedal, you still have to really lean on it to get the motor to engaged.

Unfortunately, you bought a PiP with only 6 mile all electric range. It's like buying a Mounds bar and saying Nestle misled you to believe there are almonds in it. You should've bought an Almond Joy if you want almonds.

I get it. It sucks the ICE turns on at the slightest provocation and refuses to shut off. But you don't sue Toyota for that. You blame yourself for not doing your due diligence prior to purchase and you notify Toyota to change it.

You drive like a total wus.
    Example A: Freeway on ramp.
Example B: Stoplight. Geez. I don't have all day to wait for you to crawl through the intersection, Prius-speed. You need to get out and live a little.

    Two things:
    1) I'm not suing anybody, I'm just ranting on a chat board. With Bisco, of all people, which means this is at most at 20% serious discussion. :)

    2) "Notify Toyota"? You're surely joking. They are so completely non-responsive that it would be easier to call freaking Comcast and get Comcast to fix my Toyota than to get Toyota Customer "Care" to actually do anything. I had a problem with my radio auto-playing from the USB stick every time the car turned on. They promised a fix for two years. I even started a thread here to show them that over a dozen people had the same problem. I told them that they'd mailed me a USB stick in the past, could I get new software? They denied having mailed it. Then they said no fix was available.

Finally, I just found the software update on a pirate site, downloaded and installed it. Fixed the problem. So I have zero faith in Toyota Customer "Care."

In my defense, the A's just lost four games in a row, so I'm a little cranky, to be polite about it.

Ok fine. You're right, it will stay off as long as you don't stray into the PWR zone. That's approximately 2,000rpm for the regular Prius. I don't know how much torque that equates on the PiP side. It won't work in hilly areas (like my city) so if I were to drive one to work, it'll be fine until I get to the main road, then I'll definitely have to be in the PWR zone to turn right and get up to speed, while going uphill. Of course I still have the downhill portion which I already mostly stay in EV with my 2010 (if the traffic lights are in my favour).

yes, i can't speak for every type of driving. but if you have followed the pip threads for the last 4 years, most people don't have a problem with it. the few that do are understandably outspoken. especially if their baseball team is losing.:p

I can make ICE pop on regularly in one specific situation while in EV and without touching the gas - there's some kind of bump or interruption in the road on one of the paths I travel. If I hit that irregularity, I get the expected skid control and the ICE pops on. Happens every time I forget to swerve.

"i'm not saying it can't start, but let's not pretend a slight tap on the go pedal is this world ending problem."

That is exactly how the regular Prius behaves. It was frustrating, all right, but the PIP doesn't act like that in normal driving. Either the poster complaining about unintended starts is trolling and really drives a Prius hybrid, or has a lead foot, or the car is defective. I don't much enjoy driving our PIP since I got a Leaf, but I don't have any problem at all with unintentional engine starts, unless my housemate uses all the EV range and I go to move it...

Lighten up. Like I said, I'm not suing anybody, I'm just ranting on a message board. I've had a PiP longer than everybody but Bisco. I think he got the first one in America. I waited about twenty minutes to put down my $500 deposit so I got my PiP a month or two later, on April 15, 2012. I've owned it so long, it's paid for, how's that?

When we ordered our cars, somebody figured out how to find which cargo ship had the car and found a website that tracked the locations of cargo ships by GPS, so we knew where our cars were as they sailed to Long Beach.

bisco wasn't the first one to get a PiP. I've had mine since March 6th, 2012, and I wasn't the first one on this board, either. I seem to recall the first deliveries being made in middle/late February in Southern California. A member of this board was the one of the first, but I don't think they are active anymore on the board.

Sadly, my PiP won't be paid off until next year in March. At which point the car will be given to my wife to drive and I plan to get a Chevy Bolt.

Yeah, I was obsessively tracking the cargo ship that had my car on it as it came into the SF Bay Area.

Boring. Boring!!! Your story is boring. Especially the "nobody knows who got the first PiP." Yawn!! Not a good story!

A much better, funnier version of the story is that Bisco got the first PiP. By Imperial Decree of the Internet, I hereby declare that Bisco was the first owner of a PiP in America. So now it's official.

Remember, in my last Imperial Decree of the Internet, I declared that the car shall be forevermore known as PiP, and the name of PHEV was officially banished. As you can see, my decrees work. Bisco's car is now earlier than yours.
