Just picked mine up! Do I read my overall average mpg from the ODO screen over time or from Trip A. ODO reads 55, Trip A reads 45mpg. I have only driven it 50 miles since I picked it up.

I'd suggest that you do a top-up of the tank first - for various reasons, it's unlikely to be reading correctly until you do.

    You can do 4 readings
    - one for the current trip (which disappears after you power OFF (though it flashes a "result" on the screen for a minute or so).
    - one is for TRIP A
    - one is for TRIP B
    - the other is for overall from new.

You can choose what you want TRIP A & B to be for - I've left B from when new, TRIP A I reset when I fill the tank. I envisage that if I were to go touring (say around Australia which will be 15,000km), I'll reset TRIP B at the beginning or during some stages of the journey, retaining TRIP A for tank refills.

Look up TRIP METERS in the index of your manual for details.

I always reset both trip A and B first thing when I get a new car (might want to top off first to be more accurate.

Like stated above I never touch trip B but I do reset trip A at each refill so it makes it easier to see the difference between indicated and calculated mpg.

If I am hearing correctly the Gen 4 has a lifetime mpg screen?? If this is true then I might reconsider never resetting trip B... If it does have a lifetime can it easily be accidentally reset? That would tick me off..

Yes I forgot about that the dealer probably topped up to full tank before I bought it and now everything is out of whack. Thank you

Yup! If I remember the Gen3 ODO screen had no mpg on the Gen4 ODO also shows mpg that can't be reset so that the lifetime one. Realistically I wouldn't ever have to use Trip A or B unless I'm just eating something out like when I put on the 17's for example.

Why not use the main Odometer MPG's for the lifetime gas mileage? It's always there, right in front of us.

Correct. You can use ODO for lifetime mpg.

Well technically you can reset the lifetime (what if you're the 2nd owner?) but it's not easy so you can't accidentally reset it.

The odometer MPG is from last updated. Not lifetime MPGS

I always used Trip B as lifetime and Trip A between fill ups on Gen 3. Whats different on Gen 4 fron what I understand the ODO is from last updated.

Well, I'm confused. What if you never update? Are you talking about the Eco information in the settings? (the big screen.) I've never updated anything in there.

My "hybrid" skills are e lacking.

If you have never reset or updated then the miles on "B" should match your odometer.

I always reset Trip A & B after a fill-up. Just force of habit. There is also some kind of reset you can do in the Settings, on the center stack big screen. In the Eco area.

You mean to tell me, with all that technology in the Prius, there is NO permanent/lifetime MPG number... anywhere?! (a number that can't ever be reset.) You should be able to bring up a screen, or simply press a button on the steering wheel, and see your lifetime mpg!

Yeah ok that's a more specific way of describing it.

But it's probably a better way to track "lifetime" mpg than Trip A or B, right?

The "lifetime" screen your talking about I think is the same screen my v has correct? It has like up to 6 different lines and you can reset it whenever you like or never at all but only up to the 6 in a row. I do not like that screen because you have to remember to reset it each time if you did want to use it as a daily or per tank calculator. But yeah I guess it could be used as a "lifetime" if you never touch it. I never forget to reset trip A because I track my miles thus resetting mpg and miles at the same time...

Plus we found out on our last big road trip that our trip B on our v rolls over at 10k miles back to zero but the mpg keeps on keeping on.

I have never reset "B". It has lifetime statistics. MPGs, Eco Mode, etc.
I update "A" at every fill up. The screen keeps the last half dozen for comparison. The "A" is then the current tank.

The "B" odometer does roll over every 10,000 miles. But that is easy to reconcile

    No

My spreadsheet goes for as long as MICROSOFT is alive.

krmcg is right - I was wrong (n) when I said "- the other is for overall from new." as the overall ODO MPG can be reset.

The manual says "If "POWER" is pressed and held while this item (ODO) is displayed, the information is reset".

Not sure but this one is just when you cycle through "TRIP" on the steering wheel. Previously, ODO only showed the total miles and nothing else. Now, it includes mpg since last reset (which for most first owners will be lifetime mpg)

Yes, I mistakenly zeroed out my ODO mpg one time, by holding the little black button on the steering wheel. But after driving a few miles it was right back up to 60 mpg again. (I mistakenly thought that number was the "lifetime" mpg info, and couldn't be reset.)

I guess I will just use the Trip A tank-to-tank numbers. That's good enough.
