Toyota CVT Fluid FE exists here, as well - it's for things like the Corolla and Scion iM with a pushbelt CVT, here.

I could see the confusion, because people refer to the Prius gearbox as a CVT, and it behaves like a CVT... but it really isn't one, and the lubrication requirements are much more similar to those of a conventional automatic transmission (hence the Prius gearboxes using the same lubricants as Toyota's conventional automatics).

Just go back and show them the user manual, demand a free change with the specified fluid.

I find some of the above strange, do you really believe the fluid itself has to withstand 600 V DC? I really doubt it.

Hmmm. I suggest you refer to your owner's manual. US manuals plainly show WS as well as the Canadian manuals.

If you don't have a manual, you can download one from Toyota's website.

Toyota Online Owners Manuals and Warranty

2010 Prius Owner's Manual ^ ^ ^ Refer to Page # 563 in the manual. Plainly shows Toyota Genuine ATF WS Fluid.

If it's resolved that it is indeed the wrong fluid, I would ask for a triple change, with a day or two driving in between each change, to better flush the old fluid out. Perhaps contact corporate Toyota if they balk.

    1. The stator windings must carry up to 500VAC, three-phase.
    2. 500VAC RMS for a sine wave translates to 1.400 volts peak to peak.
    3. The stator windings use insulated wire and the windings themselves are wrapped.
    4. However, the insulation may break down over time due to exposure of the windings to heat, the ATF, etc.
    5. Hence, the ATF may be exposed to electrical current, and to the extent that it conducts electricity, that will cause further breakdown of the winding insulation and eventually cause a ground fault which will be logged by the power management control ECU, thus preventing further vehicle operation.
