I have a 2006 Prius with over 300k miles. I recently started getting the crankshaft/cam position code P0016. The car is driving fine, but it does burn about a quart of oil every 800 miles. It looks like a lower mileage engine can be had for about $500-600 including freight. I'm thinking my best option is probably to swap out the engine. I saw our local resident expert Patrick Wong suggested replacing the transaxle too when doing an engine replacement since it does not add any significant labor and tends to be a more common source of problems than the engine. I'm not sure how much doing that would add to the bottom line. Have any of you successfully replaced your engine and/or transaxle? How much did the parts run you and how much was the labor? Any comments or advice for this scenario?
My 2005 has 291K. My son is driving a 2006 with 357K. They both use oil and there is no way I would consider replacing either engine until they do not run any more. At the point either engine finally dies the cars will most likely be not worth the effort. These engines will keep going a long time as long as you keep feeding them oil to burn. To find used engines and transmissions use Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market . There are several under 100k engines and transmissions in WI for $200 to $500. I had the p0016 code too. We replaced the timing chain and tensoners and flushed the engine and the code never came back.
Thanks for the reply, Brad. How can I get in touch with eicbecky? Do you know the name of his/her shop? b100, do you remember how much that cost to fix?

The previous owner drove about 45.000miles with the same oil. So thats the only reason why the chain has worn out. But thats what i think. The car had 120k on it when i replaced it. Btw some pictures View attachment 114061 View attachment 114062
Hi b100 I know this is a super old post, but I am getting the p0016 code and am looking for advice. It seems like timing chain is the most likely cause of this code from what I'm reading, but is the only way to really find out to open the whole engine up? I am not mechanically inclined so I would have my mechanic do it, and it seems like that would be a few hours of labor at least, right? My 07' prius has about 160k miles on it right now. In my place, would you just keep driving it until the engine fails or get the timing chain looked at & replaced ASAP? My mechanic gave a rough estimate of <$2k for replacing the timing chain. If I keep driving it and the timing chain fails, would that do irreparable damage to the engine? Thanks for reading and feel free to check out my post I made about this if you need more datails.
