It's very easy to change. Take your real key out and on the bottom you will see a spot to insert the tip of the key just twist and your key fob will come apart. ( This is for smart keys ) If you don't have a smart key then I am not sure.

You can use your spare key until that bad boy goes bad and then change the battery on both of them

Don't worry, I got this warning on my LS460, just change the key fob battery (I think I went on Amazon and bought 10 batteries for $11.00 )

The battery in the non smart keys is only for the remote for the door locks. If you can live without the remote lock/unlock ability then the key's battery isn't actually needed to start and run the car. The anti-theft immobilizer reads the electronic code from the key's passive transponder chip - it's powered by the electric field put out by the reader next to the key slot on the steering column. It works much like the passively-powered smart chips in "pay wave" credit cards.

I just got this same warning. Easy enough to change battery, but I am curious. Does anyone know (from experience) whether this warning means the battery is low and will be dead in a couple of months or more like a couple of days?

it probably varies like any battery, but keep in mind you can still start the car.

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting about that as I've never tried it. I'm assuming if it happens to die, it's not going to need to be re-programmed, will it?

When you open up the fob, everything's really exposed/funky. For something that costs $200~400 to replace, they could have made the battery access a little less like open heart surgery. Also, I find a flat blade screw driver that's slightly wider than the manual key tip makes it easier to prise open.
