I got the following quote for a 2016 prius Two, not II -

    (MSRP - $25,273)

Price starts from dealer Invoice - $24,106

    Then subtract:

    $1000 - Costco Rebate
    $400 - Costo Bonus Cash (through 6/15)
    $1500 - Toyota Rebate
    -------------------------------
    Total of $21,206

Plus Tax and Fees ( $5.00 title, $35.00 inspection, $125.00 new plates ($25.00 less if transfer), $349.00 documentation fee and 6.25% sales tax ).

Does this sound reasonable? Has anyone found anything better in the Boston area? I'm a bit rusty in car shopping (my last purchase was a 2006 prius I'm hoping to trade in which will be another factor in my decision...) and I'm always so skeptical with dealer offers like this because it seems there might be room for even more negotiation.

    Thanks.

Darn! I knew I should've checked with COSTCO. That's a very good price.

But I don't see the Toyota "transportation fee" in there. ($750?) My documentation fee was only 85 bucks. Why so high in MA?

    From Edmunds.com:

Pen in hand, you review the sales contract before signing for your new car. It all looks good except for one mysterious figure: the documentation fee or "doc fee." In some states, this will be less than $100. But in others it can be higher than $700. What, exactly, are you getting for your money? And do you really have to pay this fee?

The dealer charges a documentation fee in exchange for filling out and filing paperwork for your new car. To be fair, this is a complicated process involving many different forms. If you're car shopping, you should know how your state handles the doc fee. In 10 states, state government limits the doc fee. The good news is that the limits are pretty low, such as the $80 doc fee charged by California dealers. You can find the fee in your state on this chart.

If your state's government doesn't limit the doc fee, the amount is left up to the dealer's discretion. And there will be significant variation among different dealers across the state, so it's good to ask, early in the process, what the dealership charges. In many cases, all the dealers in the same area charge the same doc fee. To see a bigger difference, search in a neighboring city.

Thanks. I just emailed the dealer about this and he confirmed that the transportation fee is already included within the invoice price.

$21,206 sounds like an outstanding price. Great timing with all the rebates and bonus cash. Enjoy your new Prius. (Now I'm kicking myself for not checking with Costco. I have a low Doc Fee in California, but they stick it to us with 9% sales tax.)

It's strange. Back in 2005, my Camry SE V6 was just about the exact same price ($25,000) that I just paid for my 2016 Prius Three. (Don't know what that means... just making a comment. :ROFLMAO:)

I did end up emailing a few dealers in the area and the third one said they could beat that price by $400!
After getting more details, It works out to only $300 less, because there documentation fee is $100 higher. But $300 less is still a better deal. I'm going to drive over to dealership and check things out and hopefully if all goes well will put in the order and have a new car in a few days.

Ira Toyota was the one that initially beat the Costco Price.

I went up there looking to purchase the car but held off because I wanted to see what the hypersonic red or the blue looked like, but they did not have any available to show me. So the next day I drove into Boston to visit Herb Chambers ( The dealer affiliated with Costco...) cause I was told they had those colors on the lot. When I got there, they actually only had the blue color.

However, I discovered inside the show room they had a 2016 Metallic Gray Prius Three with 1k miles on it which was returned to them after a month by an older gentleman who complained it was killing his back. This is coincidentally the same circumstances which I bought my last 2006 prius. In the end the salesman worked out a mic better deal for that car that beat the Ira price ( including factoring in the trade-in) and got me a few extras on the car that were installed by the previous owner when they purchased the car.

I picked it up yesterday and its only been 24 hours, but its been great so far.

I guess it goes to show you that it pays to shop around and not assume costco's going to offer the best deal. Thanks for all your input and suggestions to my question and good luck to all in your future purchases.

I'm in NJ and just bought a 2016 Prius III. Costco knocked off $2538. I took the 0% interest loan otherwise I would have gotten another $1000 off.

I should add, that $2538 is very good for me since I couldn't talk a salesman into knocking off $10. I'm just not a negotiator.

What was that $2538 knocked off of? MSRP or Invoice price? Hope you are enjoying the car.

    Let's see.....
    That's about.....what?
    23K??

It's not highway robbery, but right now the market is fairly soft.
I'd try to negotiate the doc fee to zero as well.
They're already charging you a fee for the title, inspection, and plates.
For a cash deal that should be documentation enough.
    What about the delivery charge?

23 seems a bit high, but in Bastan it might be the best you can do.
Offer them 23 flat OTD on a cash deal and see what they say.

Don't forget to say NO!!! to any of the junk fees (warranty, glass etching, matts, pin-striping, credit life, tire insurance, prepaid service, etc.....)
