Some odd things occuring

That's the reason I bought my car in Super White (still have one black car) and tinted windows the few days after bought it. I got 5% for all three in the back, 15% in front and 70% for windshield (yes, front windshield). Also bought from here the Heatshield. Not sure I can say it's cooler than the outside after all day under the sun, but it's never that hot like other cars I have.

 

yep, I have had the same experience the 2 times I moved the car a short distance (30 ft) and turned the car off. This past Sunday I moved my car from the driveway to the barn (about 30 feet) and turned the car off. This morning (first time I have used the car since Sunday) turned on the car, and it started running a little rough and I remembered what I had done. By the time I got to the end of the driveway (150 feet), the car was running normally. So note to self, when moving car to the barn, use EV mode or drive to end of driveway, turn around, and then park in the barn

When you get a chance, get your windows tinted. And for me, I crack my windows ever so slightly on hot days to keep the major heat out. This is a common issue with a hybrid, but the beauty of it is, your Prius computer tries to make everything run normal under hot conditions. Do what you can upfront to keep the car cool and the rest is good. As an example, my AC compressor use to make a loud buzzing noise when I started because of how hot the interior got. When I got my windows tinted, the issue stopped.

 

Interesting thread. In my part of the world the summer temperatures average about 35C to 40C (which is about 95F to 105F). Never experienced any of the problems described above. My car sits outside in the hot sun all day, every day. And I don't have tinted windows.

Well, we hit record high temps here the last couple days...115 deg F on Mon and 113 yesterday. I worked from home on Mon, but on Tue, I went into work. Car sat outside all day in partial shade in front of a tree, which helped a little bit in keeping the traction battery temp from getting too hot initially. The car drove normally (i.e. traction battery still providing power) for about the first 15 min or so, then I noticed the car wasn't going into EV mode anymore and ICE stayed on even when coming to a stop. I was driving the first 10 min or so w/ the windows down to vent the hot air, before switching to A/C and that's about when the 'issue' occurred. It took roughly about another 15 min before the battery temp cooled down enough to be usable...I noticed acceleration became more normal. Previous days, the highs were only reaching the mid-high 100's, not 110+, so I think when it gets that hot, probably best to just start using the A/C maybe 5 min into the drive instead of 10 to keep the traction battery from getting too hot. Probably if the car was left in an unshaded area all day in 110+ deg F temps, the traction battery would probably be too hot from the get-go and would have required a lot more time to cool off...good thing I don't live in Death Valley where 120+ deg F is quite common during the Summer! I wonder...how do 100% EV vehicles deal with extreme heat...if the battery gets too hot and no ICE?
