UV Protection in Sunroof???

i don't have one, but would like to know as well. they're tinted, aren't they?

 

They are made of glass, and glass doesn't pass much UV, it absorbs it. Protection not required, it's "built in".

 

i read that glass passes all uv, and it's the plastic in the windshield that blocks it?

 

My Camry Moonroof was factory tinted. But I had extra tint applied on the Moonroof, along with the other windows. I thought it might help cut down the interior heat (when parked.) Even with the extra tint, and the sunshade pulled shut, and a Heatshield in the front window... it still got hotter than blazes in that car.

I read that the Two Eco has special windshield treatment, but not the other models.

 

heat and uv are two completely different things. our hycam has a sliding interior upholstered panel when you don't want the sun.

 

uv-a causes skin cancer. uv-b, sunburn. ivc doesn't seem to be a big problem. pittsburgh glass has a pretty good write up on how the plastic that keeps the glass from shattering also blocks most uv-a., but it would be nice if mfg.'s listed the specs for each window.

 

you can also google skin cancer and auto glass, or uv and auto glass. a lot of info, but no specifics, unfortunately. as always, it's probably going to take government regulation.

 

I'm always concerned about uv-a & b. I inherited my dad's susceptibility(?) to getting skin cancer. Doesn't matter how many hats I throw on, or how much suntan lotion I slather up with... For that reason, I always get my auto windows tinted. (I don't care what they claim). Even a light or medium tints helps (me).

 

Is there a particular brand or type of tint that blocks out the most uv-a rays?

How does the percentage effect blockage? I assume the darker the more uv-a rejection?

 

Each tint will have a specification - but all I've seen are very good. I go for a lighter one, remembering my father-in-law had a dark tint put on his car (darkest legal) and, was too dark to see out of easily, particularly at night time or even dull days. I even noticed it too and I was much younger. And I'm now about the age he was when he did that. Yes, it looked great from outside!!!

 

It was just to much heat for me so I opted out this time around. Nice toy but I like the sealed roof for many reasons.

 

There was a window tint thread recently. Most of the guys recommend finding a shop that applies "3M" brand tint for durability, fade-resistance, and uv blocking. You might do a search for that discussion.

I honestly don't know what brand my tint is. (I never asked). Hopefully it's blocking some of the uv-a rays. I just went with a light/medium tint, (34%?) and I can see fine at night. With regards to heat, I specifically bought a white Prius because I thought it would stay cooler inside when parked. I have the tint, and I place a Heatshield in the front and rear windows... but it still gets hot as a chili pepper inside! (I'm glad I didn't buy a dark gray or black car.)

 

Also the tinting place refused to do the sun/moon roof on the 2012 and 2011.

 

Me too. No holes in the roof of my Prius.

(It's not a pretty sight to see an Old Guy driving around with his bald head sticking up through the sunroof!)

Have noticed the difference in inside temperature also. The Moon/Sun roof needs that solar fan to keep the heat down.

I am too short to stick through the roof and getting shorter everyday.

Pretty soon I will not be able to see over the steering wheel.
