2016 Prius would look better if the rear bumper wasn't black

I apologize for the sloppy Photoshop, but I really really hate the new Prius' rear black portion. It gives it an illusion that it's very thin on the back

I suppose two solutions would be

#1 - Have that portion painted

#2 - Buy a black or darker Prius so it's harder to see it

First post didn't post right. I was going to say you might be able to find someone in here to do the painting.

    Hi Tideland,

I could use your help. I have emailed priuschat for assistance in simply starting a thread. I haven't received a response. The only options I have in starting a thread is to piggy back on someone else's thread, or If I try to do new thread, I have to post individual priuschat members, not a thread for everyone to see,.............you get what I am saying? I have desperately wanted to start a new thread, but I can't. What am I doing wrong?

I'd want to see it at a few more different angles.
But judging from that picture I think I agree.

Is the original just black plastic, or painted black?

Just about every car I've had has had some part - used to be both bumpers and other bits and pieces, on my current car it's the grille - in raw black plastic, which, after 4 years is starting to go a mottled grey. One of my cars a few years ago, the back bumper had to be repaired, and they resprayed it the original black/dark grey colour - making the front noticeably an awful faded grey. Nothing I could find would correct it, unless I had it painted (though shoe polish did a reasonable job temporarily, my son discovered). I started to notice other cars of the same model which had the bumpers resprayed.

In the semi-tropics, even parked under cover 95% of the time, 3 years is about as long as they'll stay looking good. So maybe painting could be a good option.

I was thinking about what bothers me about the looks of gen 4 the other day and came to the same conclusion. If they made the change you just posted I think I could like the looks of it a lot more. Just my opinion, and I find it interesting someone else came to the same conclusion. Post pics if you do get it changed!

The black part is not smooth texture plastic. Don't think it would look good painted white.

If it was a smooth plastic or metal like the rest of the car it would look better.

In that case, buying a darker color 16 Prius may be the only way to go.

I have never been a fan of plastic bumpers (Pontiac Aztek and some older toyotas), but I actually like the black plastic one on the new prius. I have it in black so it isn noticeable as much, but I think it looks great on white. Look at the 3rd gen Prius side by side and then you'll see why. The 3rd gen Prius is so round and boring in the back.

Textured plastic can be painted to a smooth finish by using a filler primer.

    Merged.

This is the first car I've had since the late 90s with a black plastic bumper, looks like I'm going to have to buy some "Back to Black" spray again.

The black "skirt" on rear bumper is a trend that seems to have migrated over from Sport Util Vehicles, in the last 4~5 years. It's just one more of the superfluous "styling exercises". I like what you've done with the photoshopped version, big improvement, drives home how silly some of these features are.

Similarly, @Frederickdawg sprayed his black 2016 fog light blanks, to match body color. Looked good, big improvement:

If that area was white... it might show off way more dirt kicked up from the road.

    I love the black/white contrast.
