I have been working on this for a while. I am at a dead end Replaced 2 year old Dorman battery with a new one. Replaced dead 12V battery after 1 year. Both batteries brand new. Battery charges and stays charged while driving. Hybrid battery dies almost immediately while car is stopped or idling but charges back up when driving. Car gave me a P0A80 code (hybrid battery). For the last year or so, I have noticed a hesitation when pressing the gas. It is as if there is no signal to the engine to turn on when it is needed. 2006, 222K I still have not done a draw down on the battery to check its performance. But I am assuming there is no problem with the battery. I believe it is a computer problem. Or something wrong with the charging capability
who is installing the hybrid batteries? if it were something besides the battery, you should be getting other codes. are you reading with tech stream?
you should start documenting your 12v voltage on a daily basis, every morning under the hood, before opening any doors. don't take your fob with you.
That is a bad assumption. Do the test S Keith mentioned and confirm. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that you have yet again got another bad recycled (not new) Dorman battery.
i'm starting to think that you're having computer issue's. why not pick up some salvage ecu's and swap them out. quick and easy, then you'll know for sure.
I would go back into the battery and double check the connections. Make sure the correct nuts were used on the connectiins. Also check the plugs for the HV battery computer and other plugs in the HV battery compartment.
Can you please clarify this point Scott. Did you replace the Dorman battery with a new (from Toyota) battery or with another reconditioned battery. If it was another reconditioned battery, was it from another vendor or was it a warranty replacement from Dorman? If it's a reconditioned battery then don't rule out the possibility that it's faulty.
Also, I'm not quite sure on the timeline. When we're the batteries put in? (the Dorman, the 12vand the "new" one) And did you have the hesitation problem when you had the Dorman in, when you had the 12v replaced? If you replaced the Dorman with a new one from Toyota, your old HV battery computer would have been grafted onto the new Toyota battery pack. So if you had a computer problem when the old pack was in place, the computer problem would transfer over to the new pack.
I'm going to say the replacement Dorman battery is probably bad. Just get that replaced and your troubles will be solved. You should still be under warranty
Sorry for the delay. I was not getting email notices. Right now I have the car at the place where I ordered the Dorman. Yes, it was another Dorman battery. I am beginning to believe it might be the HV battery too. When I said new batteries, I meant I received a "new" Dorman. It is their standard reconditioned battery. But at the same time, I installed a brand new Optima 12V since that had also died but was under warranty at Amazon. I have been checking the 12V every day before driving and it has been between 12.3 and 12.6 volts. That is interesting about the computer problem transferring over to the car or battery from the old problem. I can see that happening. I thought about getting a couple old ECU's off Ebay and giving them a shot. But right now, I just got too frustrated and took it in. I am leaning towards another bad battery. I hope that is all it is. But if so, I will let them decide so they do not think it was my fault. One thing my mechanic brought up that he seemed to frown at. My battery fan has not come on during this whole problem. It only came on one time. When the original Toyota battery failed. I cannot remember it coming on any other time. It was loud too. I would have noticed it.
Great clarification about the replacement pack. You mentioned that the fan did not come on. Any reason to think that the fan is not plugged in? I have seen that get missed in reinstallation, but usually the car won't start at all. I would not mess with putting in different ECU if the replacement pack is still under warranty. In that case continue to work with Dorman. They will get things worked out.
battery fan is only loud when on high. it can be on one of the lower of the 6 speeds and barely audible if at all. you really need a scan gauge to know for sure.
