This is our first new car purchase. Any tips on the process? I negotiated via email with all the local dealers and used the costco auto program price as a start to my negotiations. I've got the price down to 28479 for a grey for touring with convenience package. They also offered all additional options at invoice. I plan on getting most of the ad ins. Protection package, all weather for mats etc.

We are going in at 6 for a test drive. I think this is a pretty good deal, but I'm worried they are going to try to screw me somehow with fees and crap while we are going over paperwork.

Did they catch you guys off guard with anything during purchase?

Drive it in normal mode. Eco mode won't help at all after you get used to it. And... Great choice!

What do you mean by it won't help? Gas milage is virtually the same?

Once you get to know the car, yes. In fact, I get better mileage driving it as any other car and keeping up with the traffic, that being careful to keep the hybrid indicator in the first half or even in the economy zone. It's a really remarkable vehicle!

After you say "yes", all dealers I've dealt with in the last 10 yrs usher you to a beautiful young lady (yes, that was how I would describe her last 3 times) who uses charm to try to sell you finance, insurance, tinted windows, paint protection, fabric protection, mats etc etc. All of which are between double and triple the price you'll pay to get them privately. Yes, if you opt for all that stuff and the big $$$ you'll pay, you pick up a car which you don't have to take to the window tint place next week, paint protection the next week etc. But it is BIG $$$.

Good point. I almost went for the tint one dealer offered at a decent price, but they didn't offer ceramic so I'll definitely be getting that done elsewhere. I'll be sure to avoid eye contact

i think you've done everything right. you just have to say no from this point on, and be prepared to walk if they press you. i don't think i'd bother with things like the protection pkg or mats, you can get them later, after youve thought things through. all the best!(y)

Toyota dealers put some sort of fabric and paint protection on cars when they receive them.

Ahh, not in Southern California they don't, and if they did I'd go somewhere else to buy.

Once you've shook hands on any document, be on alert for extra charges, especially if they rewrite it. Not sure how prevalent this is, but Open Road Toyota in Port Moody tried this on us:

Initial document said "included" for "Documentation Charge". Then they rewrote the document with their letterhead, and "included" became "$295". That's dirty.

that's a good price in california. i got one quoted for about $500 less in tustin. i'm gonna go monday and probably trade in my 2011 package 3. gonna miss my jbl but i just want a new prius. the package 4 touring i got quoted doesn't come with the jbl package. also, if you won't do the 0% financing, make sure you get the $1000 rebate. good luck. please share what you ended up with.

There is a minor, vaguely possible advantage in buying accessories (like floor/dash mats) from the dealer. I bought them with my KIA 10 yrs ago, and the driver's floor mat started delaminating. Because they were genuine and bought at the time of purchase, they were included in the manufacturer's 3 yr warranty - and came in a set of 4, so all 4 were replaced free.

But with tint etc, that's not going to happen.

WE DID IT! 2016 prius four touring. magnetic gray with black interior. It has the convenience package, rear bumper protector and carpet mats, but I'm good friends with a guy in the service center so hes going to hook me up with a bunch of the add ons at employee discount, which he says is about 50% off. I want to get the side moldings, door edge guards, and aero side splitters. He advised me to buy aftermarket all weather mats because he says Toyota's aren't very good.

We ended up adding the 7 year warranty (my wife insisted), a car alarm, and ceramic window tinting on all windows. I was actually pretty impressed with the pricing on the tinting, it was very comparable to other local places I have priced (around $400 for the 5 back windows and 2 front) and includes a lifetime warranty. He also gave us the warranty at a discount so we only ended up paying $1750 for it.

After the warranty, car alarm, tinting, and tax it totaled just over $34,400. a little bit more than we planned on spending, but we are happy with the purchase knowing we will get great gas mileage and it will likely last us 20 years with minimal repair costs.

Thanks everyone for the input, we are super excited.

Touring 4 is the best IMHO. But you can refuse it as stated on the window sticker.
