Your top three reasons for buying a Prius Gen 4

Good poll. Gas milage, Style, Safety tech features were high on my list.

I can tell from the smile on your face, you're enjoying the ride as much as I am!

 

I had a gen 2 with 200K. Did nothing except oil changes for 10 years. I bought that to be green and the mileage. Fast forward to today, I'm still green, loved the Prius mileage and couldn't ignore the fact it was the best car I ever owned. The Prius generations have gotten better with each release, The Gen 4 has so many improvements and new features. Hope our new Gen 4's are better than all the previous versions.

 

One more reason, and this is important. It's large enough and self-contained for climate control for overnight camping in any weather condition. Day hiking in Joshua Tree or the Mojave? Seat down, inflate air mattress, put car in ready mode and drift off to sleep in a 72 degree capsule for about $1.50 a night to stereo music. The engine will start and charge the battery when it's needed. In the morning, coffee up with an Aeropress and hit the trail. I pity the fools that tent camp at the trail head.

 

William, sounds great. So, no worries when leaving the car in "ready mode" for long lengths of time? I'll have to try that some time.

 

The engine will start about once an hour and run for up to three minutes when the AC is on. If you set the parking brake you hardly notice it at all (the starting sequence is very smooth). There is no danger of damage leaving the car in the ready mode.

Of course, if its cold just leave the car off, crack a window and use a sleeping bag. It's a great car for casual camping. No camp set up. No camp break down. Wake up, coffee up with the Aeropress and you are ready to go in 10 minutes.

And if you like to bike, add a hitch and rack. I added a Curt hitch to my Gen 4.

It has implications...
If high MPG (fuel savings) is top priority, then that means buyers are directionally in states (CA) or countries (UK,EU) with high gasoline prices, or else they are planning on putting lots of miles on the car.

%USA Prii sold in California up to 33% this year so far, so that is tentative confirmation.

In much of USA we are expecting lower gasoline prices so the high MPG justification is probably weaker outside California.

Currently $2.75 in my part of L.A. County. (If it ever goes back up to 5 bucks, I'm going to cruise by the gas station, honk, smile, and wave! )

 

So I cheated because I bought a BMW i3-REx but the requirements remain the same. Just I found a loaded one coming off lease that was priced in the same range as the local dealer offered a Level 3 with TSS-P. Please understand that a lot of the BMW i3s coming off lease are minimal configuration without the 2014 safety features. BUYER BEWARE!!!!

Had I not found the used car that met my requirements, we would have waited until the model-year change when we could get a Level 2 ECO with TSS-P. This was just a 9 month window and we fell into a sweet deal.

I would say good reliability and high gas mileage are environmental reasons (for some people, it is pocket book). I wanted a more environmentally friendly car but also something I liked to drive. I love driving my Prius.

 

I agree. While I've never owned a Prius myself, my son in law has a 2nd gen with over 200k, and my daughter has a Prius V with over 100k. Both have been trouble free, and of course their mpg are great and needed as they both commute, separately 100 miles 3 - 5 days per week. I really don't understand why Consumer Reports rated the Gen 4 so low (76), perhaps after the model has been out for a while the rating will improve in their eyes. J

 

I'm glad they rated it low. Because we know it's much better... and Consumer Reports often gets it wrong IMO. If that makes sense? What am saying is... I have even more confidence the Gen 4 - glad CR didn't jinks it! Haha

4) Because nothing else out there beats it

 

I can't vote or buy one because of:
1. Several forum members tell me it's "hideous".
2. Several forum members tell me without a spare the world will end.
3. Pearl S has only 27,000 km on her (though the warranty has expired).

So three reasons not to buy.
