FWIW I got the relay harness free with my kit back in the day (going on 3 years). I don't use it though and things have been fine. YMMV. It is "recommended" to use the relay harness.

well, don't you think there might be a reason why they recommend it?
I installed it with the harness & never ever had a problem in three cars////

When the relay harness is used, the original lowbeam connector is used only to supply a low current "signal" to allow current to flow from the battery (fuse box, in the Prius) to the ballasts.

If no relay harness is used, the ballasts have to get all their power through the original headlight circuit wiring, which wasn't designed to handle the initial voltage demands that HID can place on the system. That's why some people have had problems where one HID bulb fails to ignite, or turns off when the ballast detects insufficient voltage available.

What is the average lifespan of an hid bulb? I ask because a premium halogen bulb lasts about 300 hours which really isn't alot. A DDM kit runs $80-$90 vs a premium halogen bulb which runs $40, but you would have to replace it every year.

What is the main reason you recommend a TRS hid kit over a hid DDM kit? Would you go with 4,500, 5,500 or 6,500 hid bulb and why.

DDM seems very fair to me especially for the price, but if anyone can chime in as to why TRS far exceeds what DDM offers I would be willing to listen.

I believe the Morimoto ballasts are higher build quality.

In my experience the lifetime of an HID bulb is a couple years for aftermarket and 2-3 times that for factory HID systems. Well, except for Gen 2 Prius lol.

There is a reason but isn't necessary on every car out there. I've installed kits without the harness on at least three cars and not had a problem (except for short bulb life but those were $15 eBay bulbs). The Morimoto / TRS kit bulbs last a long time.

Regarding HID bulb life: make sure you get AC and not DC ballasts, AC ballasts ensure that the bulbs last longer.

Regarding the use, or non-use of relay harnesses in HID installations: while there may be no apparent issues with an installation without a relay harness, ballasts will last longer if you use the relay harness because, stable current is provided to the ballast's electronic components.

I wanted to put my order in online for the XB35 along with the H11B 5500K bulbs
After reading this whole thread and watching the videos I'm still not clear do I need to choose and add to my cart the HD-Relay or Canbus ?

You do NOT need the canbus piece. The relay harness is up to you but as people have said, it is recommended.

I don't understand why theirs so much confusion ?
I just called and TRS after i put in my order online to make sure i ordered right and the guy I spoke with told me you can use ether the canbus or the harness and that most people prefer the canbus because its easier to install
To late already ordered the harness
Is there a how to video out there showing the harness install out there ?

I just noticed I'm missing one of the plastic fasteners that hold down the side panels where the ballasts sit
can they be bought in a auto parts store what would you call them ?

You did good by not getting the canbus. If you read through this thread, someone previously ordered the canbus kit and ended up taking it out.

As far as the relay, it basically goes between your power source ( Looking for 12V+ Power Lead Under the Hood | PriusChat) and your oem lowbeam plug that used to be connected to your driver's side bulb. The harness also has connectors that plug into each ballast.

Trim panel clips. Take one with you to match it. If they don't have any, go to a body shop or the dealer. I wouldn't buy from the dealer though, I'd search for the Toyota part number on eBay or Amazon lol

Anyone happen to have a link pointing the where i can get that particular Trim panel clip at ?
Even a link to exactly what the clip looks would help ?

Also is there no install video floating around on how to install the kit with the hardness ?

Not sure what clip you mean...since the car doesn't have a factory location for ballasts. Could you post a pic of the clip you need?

The harness comes with instructions. It attaches to a positive stud in the fuse box and to ground. Then it runs to each headlight plug (coming from the car) and there will also be a place to plug in each ballast

Talking about the clips that hold the side trim panels the ones you tape the ballasts on to I'm missing one those clips
