On models with no spare tire, what are folks doing?

Looks like 11 is as close as I can get for a donnut for the touring

 

Oh I love it. For example if someone says: "if I take off the wheel covers will my mpg go down", or "will higher octane gas help". Try it, and report back.

Told myself I would never buy a car without a spare... And then I bought a PiP without a spare. 3.5 years later and nearly 100k miles, I got low air warning twice. Drove slowly to the gas station both times and filled up. Took it over to Americas Tires and both times they patched it up for free despite not buying the tires from them. I ended up replacing the tires at Americas Tires when they did wear out.

I did a lot of research and I guess I have analysis paralysis. 2009+ Corolla and 2010+ Prius has the same size spare. They are 16" for some reason. The overall diameter is smaller than actual wheel. That's why they call it a temporary spare. Older Corollas and Gen 2 Prius use a smaller spare. They'll bolt right on but will have an even smaller diameter than stock. This won't mess up the computer. A full size tire and rim can be purchased from Tirerack for around $100. Then there is no place to securely hold it down in the trunk and it takes up so much space, even the spare.

Ehhhh... I guess I've sorta chosen the cell phone and roadside assistance as my alternative. I'm not going to use that gunk unless there is no cell reception or a serial killer is on the loose. Cleaning that gunk will cost a lot of money according to Americas Tires.

 

Thanks for the information , appreciate it. Why won't the spare temp wheel bolt down into the floor pan area ? Surely its just a case of buying the bolt down screw from main dealer ?

he's talking about his pip, which has the charger in the spare wheel well, not the gen 4, which has an empty spare wheel well, (other than styrofoam) whether or not it comes with a spare. so he would have to strap the spare down above decks, which is what i do. (okay, no strap)

 

Oh my, another issue to overcome.

 

From a space saving perspective, I sorta like those inflatable temp spares some German vehicles have. I presume they are not available for Toyota 5-hole wheel, but I wonder if this option might become available as more and more spare tires are deleted from car designs.

I don't see why not, bike pumps work on anything. You could have a CO2 pressure thing, whereas CO2 is not great for inflation (leaks worse than air) but for a day who cares. I think they give you ePump in the vehicles.

Would this fit in the PiP underfloor? Probably not but not sure what it look like down there

 

Australia, away from the major cities and main routes is like that too - in fact, if I do an around Australia drive, I'd probably take 2 full size spares.

I distinctly remember the nervous feeling driving without a spare tyre after a tyre was destroyed, and knowing it was about 660km to the next service centre - almost all of it out of Mobile Phone coverage. I've only got a temporary spare in my current car, but I had no intentions of going too far - but that is likely to change with my next car (which will probably be a Prius), and I'll be looking at options to install a full size spare.

 

no, pip only has a narrow spot left in front of the bumper. goes all the way across, and about 6" wide and 10" deep. some people stand up the compact spare in it, there are pics in those threads. they stick up almost half way.

You can pump up regular car tires by hand. You just wouldn't want to.

Since I don't have that floor pan area, I used the passenger footwell when I borrowed the spare from family members' cars (lots of corollas and Prius in the family) for long trips. My girls still sit in car seats so they didn't miss the leg room.

Oh yeah, my spare problem was overcome by events. I purchased a second Prius with a spare. That's your solution right there!

 

You didn't have a floor pan area in the previous generation Prius? Or current one?

I have the Plug in Prius so it's filled with batteries unlike your Gen 4.

I think if I were in that position, I'd get my passenger to carry it on his/her lap!

 

if they offer prime with spare, i'd go for it.maybe mount it on the roof.

 

yes, and it holds a reasonable amount of emergency stuff.

 

Better yet, on a bumper hitch.
