4 or touring?

    I need to decide whether to get a Prius 4 or a Prius 4 Touring. It's a compromise either way.
    I'm on vacation at the moment and renting a 2016 Prius 1 or 2. I don't like any of the interior changes but that's a rant for another post.
    At home I have a 2013 Prius 3 that I've had almost three years, and prior to that I drove a 2010 Prius II, not two, for three years. My lease is up soon.
    In my 35 years of driving, numerous times I've scraped or hit something next to me, so the misnamed Intelligent Parking Assist sensors seem ideal for avoiding that fate in the future.
    Due to Toyota packaging of options that means either a Prius 4 or 4 Touring, fully loaded. Both are the same price with all the options. Both have drawbacks.
    First let me explain my driving situation. I live in San Diego and usually drive 12 to 20 miles a day, mostly on highways that are often congested. The longest I'll ever drive is to Los Angeles, 120 miles away on crowded highways.
    If I get the 4 instead of the 3, I give up the extra storage space under the hatchback floor, because the 4 has a full spare instead of a temp. I can live with that, especially since the specs say the 4 has three more cubic feet of cargo space than the 3.
    If I get the 4 I am giving up fog lights, which seem useful (I've never had them). I am also stuck with a moon roof I don't want.
    If I get the 4 Touring I am giving up the HUD. I am also stuck with larger wheels I really do not want, and a two inch longer turning radius. One of my favorite things about the Prius is that I can turn on a dime.
    Too bad you can't pick or choose features.

    The Four with ATP and PCP is more expensive than the Four Touring with PCP as I recall. It's not huge, but it's a difference. I have the Four Touring. I like it. I'm happy with it. The way you're talking, though, you want the Four.

    Welcome to the 4 vs 4 Touring indecision. I'm ending up choosing the touring version. I liked the looks of the touring more, but the 4 had the HUD and moonroof. Moonroof...it would've been cool..but I've lived with out one for years now. You can't miss what you never had. HUD would be cool, but I feel like in a few years, it's going to feel out dated. I'm not a fan of Toyota's Entune navigation and I prefer Google Maps or Waze. I plan to install the Beat-Sonic plug and play adapter so I can mirror my phone to the touchscreen. It's the closest thing to Android Auto or Apple Carplay. Good luck with your decision.

    The Four and Four Touring has no spare at all (just a compressor and gunk kit), that's why it has more cargo space than the Three or Three Touring, and the floor is lower.

    The Two, Three, and Three Touring have the same level(ish) floor and spacesaver tire configuration, the Two Eco, Four, and Four Touring have the same low floor and inflator configuration, although it is possible to modify the 2E/4/4T to take a (spacesaver only - I believe the 2/3/3T can take a full-size tire in the spare tire well) spare tire after the fact.

    You seem confused about the features. Go to a dealership that has the different models in stock. Look at them and a decision may be clearer.

    The only reason you should get the Four Touring is if you don't want the features of the Advanced Tech package. Ive said this so many times on different threads, but I recommend the Four with the ATP and PCP packages. Thats how you get the most features, which I wanted. The ATP isn't available on the Four Touring.

    The ATP adds features such as the HUD (one of the coolest features on the car), which I can't live without and a sunroof. You can't get a sunroof on the Four Touring because it adds too much weight.

    The Four also has a slightly better ride than the Touring because the Touring has the low profile tires.

    The Four doesn't have a spare either, a bad mistake on Toyota's part since the Prius is most popular in California, which has the worst roads. The good thing about it is that you don't have to worry about not having a space until you need one.

    GO THROUGH COSTCO. YOU CAN SAVE A COUPLE THOUSAND OFF THE MSRP!

    Seems like the Four is the lesser of the two compromises (moonroof vs. 17" wheels). 15" tires will be cheaper to replace, lowering the ownership cost (unless you plan to lease again). The front headroom is copious enough that a moonroof will not compromise headroom.


    Also, no model has a full size spare tire. The Four and Four Touring have a tire repair kit (goop and pump) so that's why they have a larger (deeper) trunk.

    ...I crawled into the passenger seat yesterday (no sunroof) and my head touches the top. Strange how that seat is so much higher than the driver's seat. Doesn't appear to be. Both seats should have height adjustment. (Do only short people own Prii's?! :confused:)

    Very good point about the difference in headroom on the passenger side.

    I have the same issue (I am just 6-3 but with a long torso)and need to recline the seatback a bit on the passage side (no sunroof). I fit fine in the power driver's seat -- all the way down-- but not by much. I am near certain a sunroof would be a real problem on either side.

    Went through the same thing and I ended up getting the Four Touring. I really wanted the 17" and for flights. I haven't had a sunroof for 5 year so I'm not missing it, though had I got the Four, I'd miss my sunglass holder. HUD I can also live without, but wanted the touring suspension. Also the headlights look different between the Touring and non-T. Hope this helps.

    Four Touring with convenience package is the best deal. See my thread as I try to update it daily. Ride, MPG, and comfort at 42PSI is phenomenal. Just don't order until my red one is built. If folks are getting better mpg than me than it is a real miracle.:LOL: When Someone gets into the car it does not go down. :)Also does not scrape driveways like the others did.:)
    Also love the Gateway cow interior. Just wish it was a real dead cow hide.:ROFLMAO:

    I was a bit of an impulse purchaser but I knew after having a sunroof in my last car that I didn't care for one and I knew I wouldn't use a HUD. I like my 4 touring... a lot :)

    I didn't want the 17" wheels but did want the automatic wipers which weren't offered with the four, abra kadabra, the four has everything, including automatic wipers (rain sensing), love the sunroof, love the hud (turn off everything else and it's dark with the hud giving ethereal mph, stealth mode;)

    I ended up choosing a 4 w/ ATP.
    I primarily wanted
    • power driver seat w/ lumbar (that ruled out the 3)
    • Radar CC
    • Lane keep assist
    • auto wipers
    The main reason I didn't want the touring is I don't like bigger wheels and they drop the gas mileage a bit.

    As a matter of fact I'm picking up my new Blue crush 4 this afternoon! This has the ATP. The dealer had to trade and it also has PCP as part of the package. I didn't know they usually come together? Anyway, I'm sure I'll like it.

    Same on the Gen 3, except the Gen 3 doesn't have the luxury of the peak of the roof above the front seats. The Gen 2 had a "normal" mounted front passenger seat - i.e. one where it's not significantly higher than the driver's seat.

    That's the kind of things that really bug me. It would cost hardly nothing for Toyota to put the same kind of height-adjustable seat on the passenger side, too. (I'm a tall big man, and I date TALL women! She will have to lay down in that passenger seat. :ROFLMAO:)

    I'm back home and driving my 2013 Prius Three after a week of renting a 2016 Prius One or Two. I have confirmed that the lower glove box on the 2016 Prius is much shallower than the previous generation, in addition to the top glove box being gone. That's a problem, but not enough of one to prevent getting a new one. I eventually got used to the new gear shift and parking brake pedal locations.
    I just read the May 2016 Consumer Reports and it lists the 2013 Prius as the best used car to buy. That gives a stronger argument to just keeping my car when my lease ends in August.
    After all the advice here and after more thought I have decided that if I do get a new car, I will get the 2016 or 2017 Prius Four Touring. I can live with the larger wheels (they might even help prevent scraping the bottom) and two inch longer turning radius (35.4" vs. 33.5"), would actually prefer no moon roof, desire the fog lights, and the lower price if I get all the options. I don't mind the loss of the HUD. In the 2016 car the speedometer and energy meters are just below the windshield anyway.
    The proximity sensors (Intelligent Parking Assist, Blind Spot and Cross Traffic Monitors) are the only reason I want a new car, but they require the most expensive model and package.
    What I really want is an electric car, and the 2017 Prius Prime with a rumored 24 mile electric range would be good enough. I'd need a new house with a garage first though. Currently I park in an uncovered, unsecured lot behind my condo. My roommate had a 2012 Prius Plug-in, but he charged it at a friend's house with a garage. He now has a 2015 Prius Three.

    Wife complains all the time. Wish it had lumbar also.Swore I would never buy another Touring Four after the 2009 (weird tire size) but will PU a second 2016 Friday. The ride is incredible as well as the MPG.

    I thought the same but do not see the MPG hit so far. Ride in the Touring is awesome.
