I have the highest extended warranty. So I am hoping this can be fixed without charge. Called one dealer they say it's $100 to check. I don't think I should pay anything.

Basically a few months back I signed up for the service again after a bit. Choppy and horrible connection. I just moved on and after seeing I was still being charged by serious (thanks) I called and had them try and connect me. No luck. Now it won't connect at all.

Anyone have a similar issue with degrading connection then dead? What did you do to fix it?

Thanks ahead of time! I did a few searches. Seems nothing like this came up for 3rd gen.

I'm guessing any repairs would be covered under the extended warranty (the devil's in the details, of course), but the initial diagnosis isn't.
$100 seems to be typical for the diagnosis fee.

Thanks for the reply. I actually got a connection tonight for like 10 seconds lol!! I am just not sure if it's worth paying $100 for it even if under warranty. Can I get one free or cheap from SiriusXM? I really love the navi traffic though...

Its the crappy antenna that Toyota put on the Prius. Mine as been good so far.. But it has been starting to cut out again. Might be time for that aftermarket antenna.

Are we talking about the external antenna or some where I can replace it myself?

Well, I had the same problem (total loss of SiriusXM). After reading this board and applying my years of experience as an electrical engineer, I unplugged the antenna cable from the unit under the drivers seat, re-plugged it in and it worked! Probably gunk buildup on the terminals. And I thought 4 years of multivariable calculus was a waste :D

This is awesome. I still have not bought the $80 antenna. Cause it's freaken $80 ;). I don't want to get it and have it not fix the problem then have to return it. Really annoying. I want XM mostly for it's map traffic stuff and really don't like the small phone screened google.

I had the same issue. Retired the reset, talked to Sirius CS, and nothing. They told me back to the dealer.

They told me they needed to replace the wiring bundle, and that the part would be $375+ tax! That seems a bit absurd.

Has anyone done this? Am I better off trying an auto electronics dealer?

Of course, the warranty is now prob expired, though it was still in force when they gave me that quote

If the warranty was in force when you took it to the dealer, they should repair it at no charge.

The radio on a Prius is very easy to remove and replace. So it's not much effort to remove the radio, unplug & replug the antenna cable.

The antenna isn't too difficult, either, but you do have to separate a little headliner to do it. I'd definitely go to a reputable car audio shop. There are good ones and bad ones. The Toyota dealers tend to replace parts without trying to fix anything, and they have high labor rates. I avoid them.

When I bought the car used I got the highest level warranty from Toyota Corp. I am going to call them and see. Dealerships are so shady at times it's easy to just never go to one out of frustration that I might get the run around. But I did and do still pay monthly for my extended warranty. I am thinking it's still very valid as it's only been about 15K miles.

I just replaced the "Antenna Assembly", part number 86960-47011 on our 2011 Prius, which exhibited pretty much the same symptoms that Infini has reported. It completely solved our satellite reception problems. As a degreed Electrical Engineer whose father was a high school auto shop teacher, I enjoy doing my own repairs, so it was no big deal to pry the rear of the headliner loose (assume that the plastic pins will break - because they will), and remove the antenna assembly. (There are a few useful tips you should know first, but it's not too difficult, really.)

When I took the "Antenna Assembly" (i.e. the black base that the AM/FM antenna screws into) apart, it appeared that the metal of the patch-antenna for the satellite system had flaked away around the edges, even though there didn't seem to have been any water intrusion into the base. Knowing what this usually does to the tuning of 2.3 GHz antennas, I replaced it, with a little encouragement from our favorite Toyota mechanic.

I can send you pictures of what the bad and good satellite antennas look like, if you want.

Yes please. Sprry I can't import you from the north! But I am surely not the handy type. Never know though. I think about it a couple of times a week. Kinda bugs me it's still not working.

Sorry for the delay, I thought that I had things set up to let me know if/when someone responded to my post. Here is a picture of the BAD antenna base from our 2011 Prius:

    IMG_1315.JPG

The "patch" antenna for the satellite receiver is the blackish square on the right. Here's a close-up of just the antenna:

    IMG_1315.JPG

And here's what the antenna on the NEW antenna base looks like:

    IMG_1328_2.JPG

    See the difference?

Again, there were no signs of water intrusion or other mechanisms for erosion of the patch antenna, but when I opened the case, it just looked "black and furry", as though the conductive plating of the antenna had flaked away from the ceramic substrate (the beige-pink stuff underneath the metal antenna). When I blew on it, the black flaky stuff on the patch antenna all disappeared, leaving what the picture shows.

    Hope this helps!

I see them now! So wow it's in the base. Hmm. Maybe I can get my friend to do this. I can't believe it's such an expensive piece to replace from the dealer.

Use Craigslist to find a wrecked Prius that's being parted out. Way way cheaper. Probably $25 gets you an antenna and there's probably some other useful part you'll pull.
