Actually , I got infinite fuel economy for this little trip. The gas motor never started up. ;)

I filled up today, 522.2 miles, 8.4 gal = 62.1 by the pencil and calculator method. The dash display said 63.1 for the tank. Seems my Prius is more accurate than some others mentioned on this site.

    5/17 update
I just filled up today. 65.1mpg by the pen + calculator. The MFD (what does that stand for anyway?)
    said 64.5.
Am I driving the only 2016 that is close to correct?
In 7 fills-up, the largest overestimate was 1.8 mpg optimistic on the MFD.

Nice work! I was wondering where it would top out.

For Gen3, we had a thread for folks who achieved 'infinite' fuel economy for extended trips. My best was a bit over 80 miles, others went vastly farther:
    99.9+ Trips | PriusChat

Your Gen4 bar is set quite a bit higher, so I'm expecting to see it for shorter distances.

How long was your trip? Was it from a cold start? Any idea how far you can go on EV only from cold? Thanks

For bragging rights only, without topographic or cold start restrictions, I'm thinking of a place where these Gen4s should easily exceed 25 miles with 'infinite' (i.e. pegged at top of U.S. scale) MPG. It would be fun to see have much more distance someone can actually get.

I see no reason to leave out non-U.S. owners, even though their displays are not pegged to the same limit. Just translate their display to the U.S. equivalent. Some Japanese owners (with more MPG-friendly commutes than are available to most U.S. owners) proved that there is no distance limit for Gen2 and Gen3. They could beat 100 MPG (or 42.5 km per liter, or 2.35 liters per 100 km) on level ground, and extend their distance to cover entire tanks. But with the Gen4 display boosted to 199.9 MPG, I'm not expecting a pegged display for very large distances.

For clarification sake, the top of the Gen 4 scale is 199.9. Gen 2 and 3 is 99.9.

This shows some optimism for the future - 100 - 200 MPGs.

The 'future' arrived a long time ago. Japanese commuters and American hypermilers have been beating 100 MPG for nearly a decade.

.8 mile, it was on a warmed up motor and a full battery. You can't go far on EV when it is cold, the system starts the motor to warm it up.

Will it go into EV with a cold engine? 3rd gen won't, as often as not.

Also, if start the car cold and start rolling, without pushing the EV button, roughly how many seconds till the engine kicks in. On 3rd gen it's maybe 15 seconds.

My main interest in EV is to get the car from the garage to the driveway without firing up the engine, or the reverse. My 2 cents: there's ultimately no advantage, driving blocks on EV.

In my experience with the Two Eco, and my traded in Prius c, the colder the weather and the car, the sooner the gas motor starts up. It will start immediately if the weather is real cold...
I would like some sort of control that forces the car to go EV for like, 100 feet or maybe 50. It is so annoying to want to move the car just a few feet and have the gas motor start.

With 3rd gen the first 15 seconds in EV is pretty much guaranteed. That's frustrating for me: I can JUST make it, pulling straight out and shutting down in the driveway. But if I want to say, seesaw over to an adjacent spot in our (2 car) driveway, it takes about 3 cycles. That's what I do: roll out (counting in my head), shut down and restart, start the seesaw over, shut down and restart, finish off the maneuver. A full minute of EV would be REALLY nice.

This is in situations where EV via the button is not available, which is pretty much assured on a cold start.

I assume from what people are saying that Gen 3 onwards are different - but on my UK Gen 2, so long as I press the EV button IMMEDIATELY the car has booted up and before the engine has started, it will stay in EV mode with no time limit. It only switches out of EV mode if either the traction battery charge gets too low (obviously), OR I exceed about 30 m.p.h. (It will NOT switch in to EV mode once the engine has started up, until after it has warmed up).

Note however, that this is ONLY possible if the Heating/Aircon is OFF before I start the vehicle. If it is on, then the ICE will start immediately with no chance to switch into EV mode.

It certainly is useful for moving the car a very short distance without stressing the engine with a cold start.

If later cars won't do this, does anyone know the technical reasons why Toyota changed this on later generations?

I'm definitely not sure, but I believe that EV button does not come standard on North American Prius of second generation. Some owners did add something though. Just what I recall from reading: maybe someone more in the know will chime in.

Again, sometimes the EV button will work, right from start up. But it's so rare, I usually don't bother to try it, it's eating into my 15 seconds, lol. Typically it'll work if the car's been driven already, the engine is warmed. In other words: when I least need it.

    Thanks for the info.

As Mendel pointed out, the U.S. / North American models are different than Rest Of World models. N.A. Gen2s lacked the EV button, though numerous users here retrofitted it and found the function still programmed in. N.A. Gen3s have the button, but our cars are programmed to refuse it when engine coolant temperatures is below 20C. From past discussions, I believe that in your market, that temperature threshold is set to about 0C.

I believe the North America vs Rest of World differences are related to differing battery warranties.

In the US, Gen 2 did not have an EV button.
Edit, I see now that it has already been pointed out. I seem to remember that it had to do with the EPA and how to treat EV mode in the mileage testing.

Mine seems to be close enough with all the variables in calculating this. I'm happy with the 2016 the way it is.
