My experience with 2013 Plug-in prius

    I've owned the car for 2 yrs. 8 months, bought new, Have 9508 miles on it, do a lot of short trips using EV only, The Toyota dealer is 6 miles away according to the odometer, I can never make it there on a full charge, 50% city and 50% highway driving, According to the computer on the car I've driven 4378 miles on EV using 1254 KW, my Electric cost .20/KW for a total cost of 250.00, and computes to .057 per miles., It also says I've driven 5130 miles on Gas and used 116 Gallons, @ $2.00 a gallon the cost is $232.00 and .045 per miles, @ $3.00 a gallon it would be .067, During that time gas has been from $4.00 to $1.60, So i don't bother to plug it in when the gas is below $2.50, So much for the savings on Plug-ins and I have to haul the extra 300 lbs of batteries.
    Toyota claims 13 miles on EV, I've never gotten more than 6 miles on full charge

    sounds like you have several problems there.

    1) the pip was never intended to save money, it's a very expensive vehicle.

    2) toyota cannot control gas prices, nor electricity prices.

    3) if you cannot squeak out more that 6 miles on back roads, your car is broken or defective, and you need to fire up the engine and take it to the dealer for repair/replacement.

    most people who drive them hard complain about 8, 9 or 10 miles ev, and most who drive them easy get 13 -17 in good weather.

    Are you determining "never make it there" based on when the gas engine starts up or when the usable battery range runs dry?

    I'm going to guess that the gas engine is starting up because you are driving over 62 mph or because you are accelerating too aggressively (easy to do, especially at near highway speeds).

    Our favorite restaurant is 10.5 miles round trip, some downhill going and corresponding uphill on the return. In the summer I typically have 2.2 miles of estimated EV remaining when I get home. In the winter its more like 1 mile remaining. On a trip away from home on city streets with a small amount of uphill I usually get about 12.4 miles when the ICE comes on.

    1254 kWh / 4378 miles = 0.286 kWh per mile. A full charge is 3 kWh. This means you can drive 3 kWh / 0.286 kWh/mile = 10.5 EV miles per charge. According to your computer, you average the same 10.5 EV miles as I do. Toyota claimed 6-11 EV miles on the sticker when I bought my PiP. Getting 10.5 is at the top end of that range. I think you are getting exactly what was advertised.

    I would be amazed if any one can show a savings buying a PiP over a regular Prius without free electricity. I'm barely breaking even over a comparable trim Prius and I get free electricity at work every day.

    I get about 9 to 10 EV range without heat or air conditioning on, but with the occasional middle finger or tailgating.

    Prius life is wonderful.

    Wrong! The battery never discharges to less than about 18% to 20% of full charge.

    I'm 80 years young and never jack rabbit start, and drive somewhere near the speed posted, my wife is mosty with me and she doesn't like fast driving
    I don't care what you say about the battery, when it switches from EV to ECO there's no more just electric driving left
    No I've done it quite a few times and the same each time I never reach my 6 mi destination without it switching to ECO, Even if the gas engine would start it would only increase the electric range

    Is your house in a low area like a valley? Do you climb any sort of grade to get out to your destinations? If your first few miles are generally uphill that will take a big chunk of your charge very quickly.

    Reasons why PHEVs are rated: all electric: 0 - ....
    PIP is rated all electric: 0-6 mi, 11 miles total
    Energi; all electric 0-19 mi, 20 miles total
    Sonata Phev; all electric 0-27 mi, 27 miles total

    This is a strange thread. Even just last week, with the temperature barely above freezing and the car now 4 years old, I drove to the coffeeshop and back without ever triggering the engine and electricity remaining. When I take the 55 mph route, the 8.9 mile round-trip can just barely be made entirely in EV. When I take the 55 mph route there and stop at the grocery store on the way back (which is suburb roads), I end up making it back with over a mile of EV still. In warmer weather, the even more is left.

    So,I have no idea know what situation would limit EV to just 6 miles total.

    Heck, I've even filmed having driven for 9 miles with the temperature at -2°F...

    The rates 11 miles is useless depending on conditions you get less than 5 miles on a charge! Our 2014 volt at times it get only 20 miles under right conditions we achieved over 60 miles on a charge. I am sure the new upcoming Bolt be able to get 300 miles on a single charge under idea conditions.

    No - worlds' best ev hyper mile'ers may get barely above 7miles/kWh on level ground, no wind, sub30mph speeds, 50Lb psi tire pressure, 70°+ fahrenheit, windows up, heat/ac off. 300 miles would require a Volt, at a minimum, best conditions, to carry at least a 42kWh traction pack. Maybe the genIII?

    Since the plug-in Prius is a plug-in hybrid, that statement is useless.

    You get the same amount of plug-supplied electricity regardless of whether it is used as EV or for HV driving.
