It's pure speculation on my part, but the Prime's 3,300 weight may be near the upper bound of being able to use 15 inch tires. If they had to accommodate a 5th passenger that might have pushed into having to switch to 16 inch or 17 inch tires and larger tires have worse aerodynamics and rolling resistance and thus result in noticeably lower EPA ratings.

Good call. That's something I haven't seen anyone mention before.

Is it also possible that's the reason why the Prius v has 16" tires as the base size rather than 15"?

I was just reading the thread on the myriad of combinations of sub-models, features, tire sizes, spare or not, driving aides, and electronics on the standard G4 Prius, and wondered if the Prime will include such an overwhelming list of variations?

Personally, I think I would prefer to have fewer overall variations to choose from, but those models would be more inclusive of the options offered. The "mix and match" seems very confusing. When I bought my 2010, there were 4 variations. the III included more features than the II, the IV more than the III and etc. The G4 appears (without a lot of study) to offers some options on one, but not on another higher priced variation. At first glance, it appears very confusing.

I'm hoping the Prime will be more straight forward, and include more standard options (although at a higher price)

I like what Acura did with the TSX. You could get the base model which had tons of features, or you could get the car fully loaded, which added navigation. I still find it funny to read CL ads for people selling their TSX "fully loaded", but without navigation. If it doesn't have nav, then it's minimally loaded.

As far as options go, I like being able to add individual features so you don't have to pay for things you don't want. New cars should be made to order anyhow. I couldn't see myself being stuck with whatever the sleazy salesman hasn't been able to sell yet.

Repoint5 - Elsewhere there was a discussion about special ordering options. Unfortunately, Toyota builds them and ships them, and you select what best meets your wants/needs. Frequently you must take (and pay for) things you don't want to get what you do.

I presume you can still special order American vehicle. There is a long list of options, and you can select what you want, and it will be special built to your order. The only down side, is waiting a few weeks for delivery. In the past, you could pick it up at the factory; I do not know if you still can. Johnny Cash said "It's cheaper that way."

I thought the "Prime" was the plug-in? (or "PIP") Is there a Prime that is not a plug-in?

Prime will be a separate vehicle, not a package option for Prius. It will offer its own variety of package choices.

Toyota.com has a "Build and Price" feature. Are you saying you cannot build and price out the vehicle you want, and the feature is there just to mock the buyer and waste their time?

of course, you can only get it the way they offer it, and when you put in your zip code, it sometimes limits you.

bisco - When you wrote "vs 2 on PIP." I thought you were referring to the new Prime, verses a "new" PIP. That is why I asked if the Prime was not a PIP. I've wondered if the new Prime would be called a Prius PIP on PC like the old model. "No harm no foul."

BTW, I enjoy your comments on the other threads.

i was going to call them pip 1 and 2, but somehow, prime keeps coming up. for instance, you said prime, so i thought it would be even more confusing to reply with a different moniker. so i'll go with the flow. (even though i think it's stupid:cool:)

I kind of liked PP, but I somehow think that's not going to stick for some reason.

I'm confused, using either the 120mpge figure OR 156 average mpg / 10 gal tank (guess) indicates a range of over 1000 miles. Now with my present Pip I can nurse 75 to 90 mpg with a gentle downhill slope in the combined mode. Under ideal conditions, I do nor run out of charge. If this is so, ( 120mpge) and I am not sure it is, this is far superior to any ELECTRIC or HYBRID in the marketplace. I have a Model 3 Tesla on order, but the Prime would be a better plan especially if the recharging is also improved. So can 120mpge X 10 really = 1200 miles ? ?
    Tell me where I'm wrong.

If the slope of the car pointed downward, we would be.

I used my current PIP only as a general example of how efficient the car is in Hybrid mode.

That's great Bisco, I was speaking of continuous driving, say Boston to St. Louis with no ELec charging during trip.

ah, i see. then i don't think 120 mpge = 1200 miles on a gallon of gas + on full charge.

i think it means the equivalent distance on one charge in all ev.

The 120 MPGe refers to the efficiency of electrical use. A rough approximation that might be at most 3-4 mile/kWhr x 8.8 so you get 24-34 miles electric. Then you go to gaso mode and get maybe 50 MPG (real) x 12 gal = 600 miles more. It's a helluva good range for a PHEV, assuming you cannot recharge, it's the best by far.

Gaso MPG has not yet been announced. of course. YMMV. Guess Toyota gave us a PHEV you don't have to charge or fill-up very often.
