Toyota Primes Its New 120MPGe Plug-in Hybrid Prius

It's pure speculation on my part, but the Prime's 3,300 weight may be near the upper bound of being able to use 15 inch tires. If they had to accommodate a 5th passenger that might have pushed into having to switch to 16 inch or 17 inch tires and larger tires have worse aerodynamics and rolling resistance and thus result in noticeably lower EPA ratings.

 

we've heard there will be 3 prime packages, vs 2 on pip, but i don't think we have details yet.

 

I like what Acura did with the TSX. You could get the base model which had tons of features, or you could get the car fully loaded, which added navigation. I still find it funny to read CL ads for people selling their TSX "fully loaded", but without navigation. If it doesn't have nav, then it's minimally loaded.

As far as options go, I like being able to add individual features so you don't have to pay for things you don't want. New cars should be made to order anyhow. I couldn't see myself being stuck with whatever the sleazy salesman hasn't been able to sell yet.

 

Prime will be a separate vehicle, not a package option for Prius. It will offer its own variety of package choices.

Toyota.com has a "Build and Price" feature. Are you saying you cannot build and price out the vehicle you want, and the feature is there just to mock the buyer and waste their time?

of course, you can only get it the way they offer it, and when you put in your zip code, it sometimes limits you.

 

i was going to call them pip 1 and 2, but somehow, prime keeps coming up. for instance, you said prime, so i thought it would be even more confusing to reply with a different moniker. so i'll go with the flow. (even though i think it's stupid)

I'm confused, using either the 120mpge figure OR 156 average mpg / 10 gal tank (guess) indicates a range of over 1000 miles. Now with my present Pip I can nurse 75 to 90 mpg with a gentle downhill slope in the combined mode. Under ideal conditions, I do nor run out of charge. If this is so, ( 120mpge) and I am not sure it is, this is far superior to any ELECTRIC or HYBRID in the marketplace. I have a Model 3 Tesla on order, but the Prime would be a better plan especially if the recharging is also improved. So can 120mpge X 10 really = 1200 miles ? ?

I used my current PIP only as a general example of how efficient the car is in Hybrid mode.

That's great Bisco, I was speaking of continuous driving, say Boston to St. Louis with no ELec charging during trip.

i think it means the equivalent distance on one charge in all ev.

 

The 120 MPGe refers to the efficiency of electrical use. A rough approximation that might be at most 3-4 mile/kWhr x 8.8 so you get 24-34 miles electric. Then you go to gaso mode and get maybe 50 MPG (real) x 12 gal = 600 miles more. It's a helluva good range for a PHEV, assuming you cannot recharge, it's the best by far.

Gaso MPG has not yet been announced. of course. YMMV. Guess Toyota gave us a PHEV you don't have to charge or fill-up very often.
