I have a long daily commute and within the first few days of owning my car I found a small ding in the paint on the front of the car. It's on the plastic part, not the metal.

I had taken the car back to the dealer to get my "console applique" installed and car redetailed (they hadn't cleaned the car well when I picked it up) and asked if they could touch up the little hole. They couldn't, and they didn't have the paint, but said they would send me some paint when they get it in. It's a two-part paint, white undercoat and pearl top coat, and therefore premium priced.

Which makes me wonder, why was it so easily dinged and why can I see through to the dark part of the car?

Anyhow, what I'd really like to know is, when I get the paint, what is the best way to touch up that little hole?

    Paint will chip.
A sharp rock thrown at the car at speed...what will stop that from damaging a surface?

In regards to the paint question...multiple thin coats versus one or two thick coats.
Nothing wrong with taking days to do this. One coat Monday, one coat Tuesday etc.
    Only fill the chipped area.
Sand with 1000 grit sandpaper and polish.
Forego the clear if the white blends.

If clear applied, again thin coats after the white has dried and the white is sanded, then sand the clear only with 1000 grit sand paper then polish.

    Tricks.
Apply paint with an "00" artist brush, or a paper match or a wood tooth pick.
For sanding, take the sand paper can cut small circles that fit a pencil's eraser head, glue paper to eraser.
Goal is to keep the touch up paint off the non-chipped painted surfaces and also not to sand the non-damaged areas.
Yes, a magnifying glass can be a useful tool.

    Have fun.

Maybe consider getting that clear film that can be applied to the front of the car? I believe most dealers install it. And window tint shops offer it.

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I should explain that the chip is very tiny, more like an exclamation point than a hole, measuring maybe a couple of mm at its widest part. So an eraser tip would be much too big to use for sanding without damaging the surrounding paint. I think I will need to skip the sanding step and just fill in the chip with multiple thin layers as you described.

PriusRos, I feel your pain! I have joined the "First Scratch Club." But, in the grand scheme of things, that's the least of my worries. ;)

I read a lot of owner reviews on Edmunds.com, not just Toyota reviews, but lots of different brands of cars. Many people complain of how easily their new cars seem to get dings or scratches. They say the paint appears to be "softer and thinner" than what they had in the past. That's quite possible, I guess. The auto companies want to cut corners and save money anywhere they can.

My new ding is below the black plastic that covers the empty fog light hole. I was hoping to go at least 1 year before I started seeing scratches and dings.

Actually, I had the same problem with my silver 2006 Prius. It had little scratches and dings within a few months. I felt that the silver paint was very thin. I didn't notice any scratches with the Winter Grey 2010, even after 112K miles! It could just be the color, I don't know.

This is the first white car I've owned. It sure gets dirty, fast! :ROFLMAO: But, a few little scratches, and a few extra car washes are the least of my worries. I consider myself to be very blessed and fortunate to have a new car! :)

This is my second white car i've owned and yeah I got to agree with you especially around the wheel wells they get very dirty! I also though about applying the clear bra protector in the front. And maybe some small mud guards. I wonder how much guards will affect the aerodynamics of the slippery rating it already has??

Anyway I'm glad we snagged us the blizzard pearl cause it's a gorgeous color that for sure!!!

    Good luck!!

Touch up bottle works fine for me. I have an extra if you want to drive 1000 miles for it. Traded my Pearl. Also will have two extra GEN 3 dash mats in the tanish color as well as two cargo covers.

After driving 1000 miles, I'll probably need more than one bottle of touch-up paint to repair all the dings and scratches!

Oh well , first car in a our family that we decided against applying paint protection film.

Front bumper a few inches to the left of the Toyota radar logo. 2 pin hole chips, and one a little further up on the hood edge. Must have been one hell of rock hit and bounced doing damage in two areas.

The bumper chips are black indicating the plastic substrate I'm assuming.

Irony being, I drove slow and keep huge distances. So lost the factory fresh look today club.

Bought a Pearl Friday. Wonder if the 2012 touch up bottle will work for color?

Congratulations, enjoy the smell and mintiness while it lasts. Almost like a brand new pair of sneakers , remember those as kids? Held off getting them scuffed, after the first scuff or two anything goes.
Probably be alright the paint . Then again most factory touch up sticks never really look anything like the cars paint. Heard Dr color chips works well, never used them though.

    Sucks don't it? Hehe. ;-)

But hey, she didn't want a clear bra this time around. Perhaps it was a financial reason, I didn't dig deeper to ask.
Let's just say on previous rides 370z and a CX 5 no rock chips. One had 13k miles and the mazda 43k miles when traded. Oh, I lied.. The mazda had a small rock chip in the area that was not covered in paint protection film.

Irony being, she says this is the one shell be keeping for a long time.

Hated the bras and loved it when the women quit wearing them. My other white was manageable with the white paint stick even though I was pissed every time a rock hit it. The windshield has lasted longer than any other car for some strange reason/ "hope it lasts" (quote from Willie Wonka).

Bra's seem to be very common over here. Remember back in Eastern Europe not so much.
