Check your auto insurance policy; glass breakage is often covered with and in some cases without a deductible.

 

I would be surprised if they had a replacement in stock.

 

This message may not be specifically for you, but if you have HUD, you need the TOYOTA glass.

The insurance will want to use a substitute, don't let them do it for a HUD.

It requires reflection in the windshield.

 

At least you don't need to replace the back windshield of a Prius Prime. That car has a weird curved glass in two spots. It would cost a fortune!

 

My 2016 Prius got hit near the edge (1/4in from side) of the front windshield by a small stone and left a 6.5in crack. It was not a huge dent in the glass. I've had a number of stones hit my 2005 Prius and none had basically destroyed the front windshield. First pebble to the 2016 and poof. Am I unlucky or are these really thin? Also, does anyone with a 2016 hear a crack sound from their windshield on cold days? I would hear something that made me imagine there was something thermally causing a shift/crack noise I could hear. It was routine enough that I mentioned it in the Toyota survey weeks before my crack, but never heard back from Toyota. BTW, in one day the crack has grown to over a foot in length right in front of driver view. I have a 4 Touring without HUD. My quote for glass, gaskets and install was about $1500 with Toyota glass (a glass shop didn't even have cheaper glass for the 2016 available yet). Had the car for only like 2 months and I think it's only been filled up 3 times. Anyone else with windshield problems please post.

 

Your insurance company should cover the expense of the windshield replacement for no cost. Just contact them for this claim. There might be a maximum amount they will cover, if it exceeds that amount, you might have to pay a deductible.

 

Seriously? No cost? I'd like to know what insurance company you have and switch to that. Sure. Because the car was new I had a $500 deductible on comprehensive coverage, so that is what I am responsible for. I was told I would loose some extra discount I had because I hadn't had a claim in years, so that could add to the effective cost (or I might be looking to switch to your insurance company if they raise my rate The insurance does cover dings in that they will pay most or all of the cost to fix a chip with epoxy. But you really can't fix a >12in horizontal CRACK that runs in front of your vision. Also, the insurance company wants to put 3rd party glass in your car so you have to wrestle with them about that (and I don't think there is any yet, so I had no choice except paying up front at the dealer and submitting a claim to my insurance). Perhaps the insurance requirements for this are different in your state?

 

There should not be an increase (lose discounts) for a windshield replacement as that is not your fault. It's a road hazard. What company are you insured through? Many insurance companies offer free windshield replacements with no deductible. You should verify with them.

Even if you had to pay $500 deductible, it's still cheaper than $1500.

 

It's Am?ca. Their rep said I was getting a "discount" because I've been claim free for over "3 years". Perhaps being a discount allows them to take it away easier? I may have to switch insurance companys. I have been on the phone with the ins company and they confirm just have the comprehensive deductible. I would like to know the companies that cover windshield REPLACEMENTs for free. You are right... after the initial sting the $500 isn't nearly as bad as $1500.
But what really worries me here is were compromises in strength and rigidity made to shave off a few extra pounds from the car, and do I need to worry about the windshield breaking often on this model? anastaceyrose, did a chip start your crack or is there no evidence of an impact point?

 

I think all the major insurance companies would have free windshield replacements, just the smaller insurers might have something different. (assuming you have full coverage insurance)

I'm on the third windshield in my 2013 Prius v (original and 2 replacements). The first was an OEM part and cost around $1,500. The second was after market and was less than half the price of the OEM. The first replacement was OEM because after market was not available at the time. Both replacement windshields were of the same quality as the original. I had to pay a $100 deductible with State Farm in both cases.
BTW. I don't tailgate. It does not take much of a small stone chip to spread across the windshield. Also, I prefer to have the work done in a glass shop where they have good conditions and climate control rather than those mobile repair companies. Much better quality control. A bad windshield replacement can make you crazy with water leaks or wind whistling.

 

How long after a windshield replacement do you have to wait before you drive? I understand they will be replacing gaskets and using some kind of glue.

 

There's really no waiting. Once they are done, it's taped down and you're on your way. Just have to wait 3 days before you take the tape off

 

When I had the windshield replaced on my Prius v, there were no gaskets to replace. It was only held in place with adhesive. There are different kinds of adhesive. The better stuff drys faster and does not need tape. I took my car to the shop and it took about 3 hours to replace and for the adhesive to set.
