but, he didn't drive prius, so it doesn't count i guess.

I had to think about that for a second - 'uh....what?' - until I realised they assumed that because the car was 'electric', it would short out when wet. Oh dear.

Living here in Portland, I have not heard any odd comments in years with all the hybrids and electric cars around. Way back when I got my '04 Prius, my coworkers used to refer to it as a "golf cart" until I left my boss in the dust coming off a light.

The funniest "response" I ever got was shortly after getting my first Prius and stopping in a gas station in rural central Oregon. I planned to enter a very isolated area of the high desert and just wanted to top off the tank.

I would have been less noticed had I landed in a space craft, the attendent stared at it questioningly as he filled it, then was confused as it clicked off at 3 gallons.

I mentioned that I was just topping it off. He asked when the last time I filled it and I replied "in Portland". His shocked reply was "that's 150 miles away!".

I waited a second and replied, "hmmm... 150 miles... 3 gallons... 50 miles to the gallon? Sounds about right to me".

I pulled out leaving him even more confused than went I landed... ummmm... I mean when I pulled in.

My Answer:

"Yes......if you need me? I'll call you."

 

When gas is cheap and somebody says I'm driving a Prius for nothing I smile and say...
"No...I drive it for next-to-nothing, they don't need much gas, and.....(looking at their car) you usually don't have to fix them either."

 

Co-Worker/friend jokingly at gas station..."I thought you didn't need gas for those." My response..."It does, but goes bad sitting in the tank to long. I'm giving it back."

 

A week after I bought mine, I was at my Starbucks, sitting in my car, drinking my coffee and this man comes up to me. I already was thinking,"Does he want spare change?". The man asked me why I bought the Prius. He was genuinely interested. I proceeded to tell him about the low maintenance (longer wear on brake pads, no constantly moving water pump, air conditioning system is one of a kind, etc). Then I showed off the "stock" radio system (blue tooth, hands free phone), steering wheel controls, the EV, ECO and PWR modes and how the Prius is NOT slow and ended my conversation with, yes, 50 mpg per tank! The man said he was on the fence till he talked to me. He said he wanted to talk to an owner, not a salesman at a dealership and that I convinced him to buy one. I told him to research all hybrids, that my feeling is that hybrids in general are the future. He thanked me and went on his way.
