2012 (36k miles) vs. 2014 (46k miles) both model Two's not II's

    Hey, these are currently my best two options. Both of them are Prius Two's not II's because only 2010 used uppercase roman numerals. The 2012 is about $500 more, and I'm wondering which would be a better deal when it comes to insurance, upcoming maintenance, and resale value.

    I'm estimating that I'll be putting around 20,000 miles per year on it.

    Both are certified through my local Toyota dealer.

    You should post the actual price. Based on what you wrote the 2014 is a vastly better deal than the 2012 especially since you drive so much. But that doesn't mean the 2014 is a good deal.

    The 2014 is $16,800 and the 2012 is $17,200.

    I did a KBB and Edmunds certified price check on the 2012, and it should be closer to $16,200. I'm not totally sure on the 2014's condition and if it includes a few things that would slightly change the price (rear floor mats, for example), but I think the price listed is about where it should be.

    Have you physically inspect, driven the cars?

    The 2014 appears to be the better deal, the traction battery is 2 years younger, Standard warranties are still valid. However, the 2014 may need new tires, about $400-500. OEM tires on a Prius are generally shot by 50K miles.

    The 2012 may be in better shape overall, e.g. no exterior dents, scratches, worn spots on seats, or interior trim. Tires should still be good.

    There are only limited options that can be had on a Prius model 2 unless there were dealer installed options.

    Welcome to Priuschat! No worries! The Prius was designed to drive like a normal car. Just put the shifter in 'D' and go. Take a comprehensive test drive and decide whether its driving ambiance is for you.

    drive them both, if you like one better, buy it. if not, go with the one you negotiated the best price on.
