if you have the sensor out, there shouldn't be anymore sound?

someone else posted a thread asking the same thing. i never saw a conclusion.

 

i'm not following. you have the sensor out, is it still making noise?

I was able to pull the front off, and it looks like this



I measured i'ts resistance, and it's 7.56 ohms, speaker territory.

I wanna pull the blue back off, so that I can disconnect one of the speaker wires, and solder in a 3 watt 8 ohm resistor.
But it won't come off, must be glued. I also cannot get the metal bracket off.

I's like to put the resistor in the housing, and put everything back the way it looks originally, and retaining the connector and the housing weather profuseness (is that a word)

 

I would think that you would have to pull the coil all the way out of the magnetic field made by the pm.
Otherwise, it could get very noisy.

Just confirmed that by plugging in a 10.0 ohm resistor directly in the connector with out the speaker, does not trigger a fault with the car.

 

Did it! No more noise.

I opened up the front part of the speaker, located the wires that go to the voices coil



I then cut out a part of the plastic cone, and cut the wires at the cone, and pulled them out front.



I verified that there was a open condition on the connector.

The I soldered a 10.0 ohm 3 watt resistor.


Then I glued the resistor down, because those wires are just too tiny.
I tested with an ohm meter to make sure I had my 10 ohms.

Put it all together, and no more generated noise !!!

I can now hear my real engine / motor without the extra noise.

 

you guys are good! are these things required by law yet?

 

The implementation deadline was announced for 2018, but it seems that the NHTSA has failed to prepare rules and specification by the November 2015 cut off.

And those are rules requiring the manufacturers to put them in cars.

I don't see any regulations about testing them.

I honestly don't know what noise you are talking about. Have not heard it.

 

Oh well, I suppose to each their own.
When I first got my Prius, I had read about the VPNS here at Prius Chat, and even heard it from linked videos about the system. But to be honest, the noise was so unobtrusive that when I first had my Prius I was afraid mine wasn't working.

I literally had to roll down the windows and listen very carefully going through a drive-thru just to make sure it was working.

So anyway, I find it hard to fathom that the noise would bother anyone. I can understand where it might be of value out in the real world.
Disconnecting it from my perspective seems like a bad idea.

 

Can one just shove a bunch of cotton balls or something in there to mute it?

 

If you do not pack the cotton properly, it's possible that the voice coil will become miss-aligned and drag on the pm. That could make it louder.
If the back of the coil has a proper spider, miss-alignment is harder, it might work, but I couldn't open that side of the enclosure to be sure.

 

How difficult was it to remove that assembly?
