Vote - Guess the new PiP EV range

    There are many who speculate the EV range of the upcoming Prius plug-in, and the range estimates are all over the place. Considering the current PiP has an EPA rating of 6 EV miles, and 11 "blended" miles, what do you think the EV only range will be on the next generation PiP?

    if epa rated pip 1 at 6, then i'm guessing 12, if the testing hasn't changed. however, if toyota changed the engine trigger points based on the testing, so that pip 1 could have gotten 11, i'll go with 22, basically double the range, based on battery size and tech improvements.

    if epa changed the testing, all guesses are off.

    I said 18-21 because I was the lowest at the time. My thinking is they need 11 for CARB but I think they need more to qualify for HOV if it comes back. I am thinking 20 gives them 20 if someone says they need 20 to qualify.

    I'd like to see 22 to 25 miles, and I think that is what it needs to be competitive and appeal to the larger market.

    The Energi's are at 20 now, and we'll see their next gen sooner rather than later. The Ioniq should be around the same range as the Sonata PHEV. The majority of the sub 20 mile range ones seem to be power hybrids or compliance cars.

    gen 1 pip in 50 states would sell about as well as anything else.

    Agree think they need to match Energi because there is anti-Toyota sentiment if they do not come up to the USA competition minimum bar (eg; for CA HOV).

    I agree if they had rolled it out back then. But now the Volt and Leaf have longer ranges, the Energi's will receive a redesign not long after the new Prius PHEV reaches market, and there are others now available.

    ...you saw the big thread about NY roll-out next week right? I know it still might not come to fruition as far as sales but the car is here.

    Yeah, but don't call it a Prius, and purpose build it to maximize the EV components rather than shoehorn in something into a petrol platform.

    Unfortunately Toyota has placed their bet on hydrogen, so they don't have the resources or the motivation to put into an EV. I suspect they will be playing catch-up in the near future, although they are hoping other manufacturers will be playing catch up on hydrogen tech.
