130,000 mile service coming up

    What services other than the 5K oil change and tire rotation should be done? Should I just halve the mileage and use the 65,000 mile requirements?

    At 130k miles, the car will need a lot of maintenance items. The question is how long you plan on keeping the car? If the hybrid battery is still original, that can fail at any time, giving you an additional expense of $2000+

    I went back to the Toyota Maintenance booklet and started over at 125,000, performing the items listed for the 5k interval, and proceeded from there to follow the same sequence as the first 120k.

    No, don't "halve" the mileage, just continue to repeat a periodic maintenance schedule. Some work is required each 5k miles, Some each 30k miles, a few items every 60k miles (I add replacing ATF at this interval), and at 100k mile intervals there are a few new items:
    • Plugs (The book saya at 120k miles)
    • PCV (not mentioned in the book)
    • coolants (both loops) and then repeated at 50k mile intervals
    • I replace both the Engine coolant pump and the electric "Inverter" coolant pump as well as the serpentine belt at 100k intervals as a preventative measure

    That's one problem with the US maintenance booklet, it goes service-by-service. If they'd publish a grid-format overview, you'd likely see an overriding pattern to the maintenance.

    I tried converting 130,000 miles to km's (208,000) and entering it on Toyota Canada's grid-format schedule, here:

    Xtime Menu Manager

    (at the above link, click on the "mileage grid" tab)

    You can play around with that. I'd look at what was done previously, too. Has the transaxle fluid ever been changed? Brake fluid? Brake inspection?

    Yes, the 100K service was the most expensive periodic maintenance service. I had the serpentine belt replaced early also.

    Thanks for the chart, I'll use it to create a spreadsheet so I can keep track.

    Yes and I am approaching 300k miles which may cost more than my trusty 2004 Prius is worth. :(

    Plan on keeping it until it dies. $2000 is roughly what we paid for the initial steering repair back in 2010. We are actually in a better financial position now than back then.

    I did a spreadsheet of the US schedule for the 2010 Prius, but not the earlier 2nd gen:

    I just used the US booklet, went through it interval by interval, transferred the items to a table. In the process I noticed a few gaps/contradictions. That interval by interval list is hands-down the worst way to explain something, very unfriendly.

    Anyway, the process didn't take that long, 2-3 hours. If you're going to do that, I'd suggest to just start with the US booklet. If it's lost you can download from Toyota TechInfo (I'll attach it too).

    Thanks for that link to the files. I'll probably use the Excel file as a boilerplate and then enter the appropriate info for the 2004 model.

    Mendel. I used your schedule and the 2004 service book to come up with a version for my 2004. For 130,000 miles, I just need the oil change/tire rotation and fluids and brake inspections.

    I scanned the Toyota 2010 Prius Warranty and Maintenance Guide
    -- i didn't see anything about timing belt, etc. I'm at 140k miles..

    My only major repair has been changing the 12 volt battery.. :) I assume I'll start to have problems with the Hybrid battery... Any thoughts on what those problems might look like? Other suggestions?

    Any other 2010 owners with 140k -- or more miles.. any advice?

    And the chain will let you know if it needs maintenance by making a lot of noise. My 2004 Prius went 288k miles and 12 years on the original timing chain. Its HV battery went 195k miles and 8 years.

    Jeff, what did it sound like? Based on your sig, you didn't have it repaired but just replaced the entire car?
