There is no nice storage pan under the cargo floor on the 2016 like I have on my 2006. I was thinking of cutting the foam bump off of the bottom of the foam spare tire cover so that I can store a backpack under the floor on top of the spare tire. Has anyone tried that? Ant better ideas? I need to store a backpack and extra water in case of an earthquake.
So basically your under floor storage is now included in one big combined open space, right? So the issue just is lack of hiding spaces. Of course if you can find a nook or cranny in the spare that's good. I calculated the spare takes about 1.5-ft3 but maybe up to half that is "usable" space in the wheel.
I am just trying to make better use of the space between the spare tire wheel and the bottom of the foam slab. Toyota just filled it with foam but I want to store things there. Things that need to have but not use except in an emergency.
I would add that in at least some models it also functions to create a sort of "ducting" for the battery ventilation.
