Does the new lightweight tonneau cover work well?

I think a four is the perfect combination of amenities and goodies..

 

The new 2016 flex nylon cover is flimsy- almost gauze-like. It is attached with black nylon strings to mounting points on the hatch door and mid rear opening where the old scroll type cover hooked (where the cargo net attaches on either side). I know this won't last the 10 + years I mean to keep my 2016.I have a II trim- do upper trims have the "old" style cover?

Having owned an 04, 08, 12, 13V & now a 16, I can say that both types will keep stuff from popping out and hitting your passengers under normal driving conditions. Likewise, both will fail to contain stuff in the event of an accident. I guess that is why they are called cargo covers, not cargo immobilizers. I happen to prefer the lightweight cover in the 16 Two Eco. It is easy to install, lifts automatically when you open the hatch, and stores easily.

 

agreed. cargo is something that should be given more thought in a hatchback, in the event of an high speed accident. perhaps the highway safety insurance institute should do some testing.

 

I sold my 2004 Prius 2 last month, 293,000 miles, and bought the 2016 3 and I like the flimsy cover a lot, as it is quite convenient, it rises and falls with the lid and removes easily when I needed to put in a large load.

 

The 2016 has 4 fairly robust D-Rings at the 4 corners of the hatch area. I don't recall seeing anything similar in our 2010 but perhaps they are there too.

 

i wonder how many people, after filling their hatch with dangerous projectiles, strap them down.

 

Question to owners of 3T and below....are the cutouts there so you could add a rolling cover if you wanted to buy one later?

 

There are two at the bottom corners of the hatch for the cargo net. Maybe they are also intended to be used to tie down a flat tire.

 

There are a total of 4 on the 2016. The second pair are close to where the seat folds-- one on each side a few inches above the floor of the cargo area.

I expect your theory as to why Toyota saw a need for them may be correct. I hauled a treadmill 500 miles in the back of our 2010 on snowy roads once, and shudder to think what would have happened if we got rear ended.

Those are for the spider net. The flat net that stretches to hold cargo down. You just pick the front up and put stuff under it and it holds stuff pretty solid. I had one on all my past Prius and currently have one in my wife's v. It works great.

Interesting. In the 2008 manual it shows two straps, each going from front to back on the diagonal, using all four cargo hooks.

 

I've looked around for a spider net for the 2016 Prius, I guess it hasn't been made yet, or they're going with the envelope style cargo net in the Shop. I'd like to know if the Gen 3 spider net would work with the Gen 4 cargo area. Anyone have the Gen 3 D-ring dimensions?

 

Is should! I took the one out of my Liftback when I traded it in and put it in my wife's v wagon, no issue.

The Gen4 hatch dimensions can't be that far off compared to Gen3 right?

 

Likely not, but I'm a measure twice purchase once kinda guy.
