Bought used 2005 Prius, potential battery failure?

    Hey guys,

    This is going to be my introduction into the site, yes I've used the search feature. I bought a 2005 Prius from a used lot last Friday. In the last 300 miles four check engine lights have come back twenty two times! I'm upset to say the least, the codes are the following.

    c1259
    c1310
    p3030
    p3013

    The check engine, triangle, (!) and on screen notification come on. I've averaged 42-45mpg. The gas engine turns on at 14mph prior to the check engine lights reappearing and stays running consistently after.

    What are your opinions on this?

    12 volt battery in the trunk is bad...replace it and clear the codes, should be OK
    or return the car to the dealer and get your money back

    my opinion is there are more problems than just a 12v battery issue.

    Yep.
    Start with the 12v battery.
    Will cost around $200 for the battery plus installation.
    How do you know the codes? Do you own your own reader?
    Or is the car lot reading them for you?

    i think the p3013 code is for a coolant valve .. see if theres any movement in the pink coolant bottle at the center of the car, if not you have a big problem...the pump hasn't been moving coolant through the invertor and its damaged it and the battery pack..might want to return it and get the cash back.

    what makes you think that?

    I have my own reader, I've been checking them in real time during my daily commute.

    I'll look into this coolant bottle tonight.







    I've sourced a refurbished 12v battery for 40 dollars, hopefully it will at least throw different codes if its bad too.

    The car runs fine, at the worst it skips slightly when the lights appear.

    Ummm, can you go back to where you bought it and get a 12v?
    P3013 is hybrid battery related, though.
    Does your code reader read hybrid codes like P0A80?

    Contact me offline (call or email) and I can check to see if bad hybrid battery was reported to the Toyota dealer.

    Nothing good is going to come out of buying a refurbished 12v battery. Test the 12v battery that in there first, if it's bad, buy a NEW one.

    The reason I think there are more problems is simply because you bought the car that someone else just unloaded. Most of the time, owners don't unload a good car with just a 12v problem.

    That is very true, hopefully the battery just went bad from cold weather and sitting on a lot.

    I'll have my local parts store check the battery tomorrow.

    From your email, the 12v is within specs.
    So then that is bad news....

    P3013 is stating that one of the modules within the pack is failing.
    P3030: battery voltage defective, line snapped

    The p3013 may be a false error if the p3030 is correct.

    I have seen where there is a break in the harness that makes it (falsey) appear that a VBlock is going below spec.
    To confirm it, though, requires some serious taking apart of the hybrid components.

    If you are not using mini VCI ($20-$30 on Amazon/eBay), then there may be more codes your current code reader CAN NOT read.

    Many threads on mini VCI install help and etc. It requires the use of a laptop (32bit OS so XP ideal).

    You can see the block voltages. A sensing issue (broken wire) will be readily apparent, and tell you where to look.

    would somewhere like autozone be able to pull those codes? I took the battery apart cleaned everything as best I could, but the codes come back immediately.

    Yeah a lot of corrosion in there.

    Pace, I'd say that you've got an open circuit in one of the crimp lugs on those sensor wires coming from the corroded terminals.

    You remove the wires from vblock 3.
    Inspect and test them end to end for continuity.

    I agree, I've been in contact with ericbecky, he's been great help with this. It looks like I'll be ordering a new harness tomorrow.
    I completely forgot to do a resistance test on the sensors. I plan on taking it back out tomorrow though.

    To get ALL the codes, you four choices:
    1) Your Toyota Dealership for a diagnostic fee of $99+.
    2) Acquire mini VCI and have a spare laptop.
    3) Find a business that is using Techstream to pull all the codes; independent Toyota mechanic and a likely diagnostic fee.
    4) Find someone who has Techstream and mini-VCI cable.

    Techstream is the software made for Toyota, to read Toyota/Lexus/Scion codes; thus your current OBD2 reader is inadequate. Techstream requires a proprietary OBD2 cable, called MongoosePro. This proprietary cable is available from DrewTechnologies for $495. Drew Technologies : Introduction

    Since you really don't want to pay $495 for this proprietary cable, buy a knock off called "mini VCI" from Amazon/eBay for $20-$30. These knock offs come will come with hacked copy of Techstream software. You can always find the latest version of Techstream somewhere; version 8.0 is sufficient to work on your Gen2 Prius.

    For your safety, just assume the software has viruses, malware, etc, reporting your every keystroke back to a criminal organization. People who have installed this on their laptop report their anti-virus program going crazy. Thus the use of a spare laptop that will only be used for Toyota diagnosis, and never used to log onto the Internet with confidential info (email, banking, etc). This being said, many here have been using hacked Techstream and mini VCI w/o any issues.

    There are lots of sites that have Techstream installation suggestion and trouble shooting, its a matter of you actually searching.

    I talked to a service tech at my local dealership.

    "Sometimes the whole battery can test good but actually be bad, you need a new battery."

    This goes against everything I know, all the cells read 7.8v. The HV system works until the check engine light comes on, and the battery charges.

    I ordered part number 82165c, that should be the sensor harness if I read the diagram correctly.

    This has been my first whole week of owning a Prius...I gotta admit I'm not too happy lol
