Visual Tables of Gen4 Package Combinations

me neither, it's frustrating. it's not even an up sell. must be the weight issue again.

I'm guessing, but the reason MAY have something to do with foreign car delivery and dealer inventory. When I bought my 2010 Prius, they had the ability to tell me what was on the boat, the port and when it would arrive, but there were very few options that could be installed at the port of entry. Generally speaking, you purchase what they have, or they would try to find what you want at a nearby Toyota dealer.

I have not bought a domestic car in many years, but my last experience enabled me to special order all manner of items from a long list: color, (single and two tone), vinyl top, chrome or anodized trim, interior (leather/cloth), engine, transmission, rear axle ratio, radio and much more. I suspect that the opportunity is still available, because every domestic web site, enables you to "build" your car's options. The order was submitted by the dealer, and I received an assembly date. I could pick it up at the factory, (Johnny Cash said it is cheaper that way) or wait for delivery ..... which was only a few weeks.

 

Yeah, I remember when my parents bought cars with those huge lists of options.

Sixties and . . .

 

The last new domestic vehicle I purchased was a 1970 model station wagon.

 

1999 taurus, 2005 dakota. they ain't perfect, but better than they used to be.

 

bisco--did they offer tons of individual options, or just a few packages like Toyota these days?

 

So how does the 4T miss the target for you? It's got all the tech, no moonroof. Is the problem that you're really lusting after the HUD, or have religious objections to 17" wheels? I'm still trying to figure this out for myself, so interested in your concerns and afraid I might be missing something.

Hang on - so if you do this, what happens to the trunk? The diagram in the PDF looks like you can drop the flat panel back over the whole shebang, though I'm not quite sure what the downturned sides indicate. I suppose this is for the factory configuration from some other market, but if there's some way for me to get a spare (full or space-saver) into the 4T as a dealer-installed option, I would prefer that. It is strongly in Toyota's interest to make this available!

So has anyone had a 3T or 4T out at night and checked out the factory foglights? I've usually liked having those on other cars I've owned, but they are useless on our Gen2, really can't tell when they're on (as opposed to my 2012 i-MiEV or 2004 Matrix, where they made a dramatic difference). If they're just decorative, I can skip 'em and probably just get a 3 w/ATP. I ask because our dealership hasn't had any Tourings in yet.

 

no idea, i buy all my cars stripped. never been a bells and whistles guy. bought the taurus almost 2 years old new on the lot for 10k, and the dakota for 16k. '04 prius pkg 5 because some one else cancelled, 25k. '08 prius pkg 2 for 21k and base pip for 32k.

 

I believe everything beneath the luxury brands has gone the package route, and even some of the luxury ones too.

 

Me too. Bought a pontiac sunbird for $8K when I moved to Arizona in 1988 and my wife got a buick century for $9K. as an example. Then I used all of those savings to go hog wild and get a Model S. Sure is a big change. I'd like to replace my base PiP model when the refresh happens, but Toyota has to do it right otherwise I just run the 2012 PiP into the ground.

 

I'm sure you wouldn't have to wait very long to swap those 17s with someone else's 15s.
Just be sure to have a mechanic adjust the stops for the steering rack.

Agree it's tedious though. Weight seems to be a glass ceiling for the Prius, or more specifically they want to be able to quote a single MPG for all 5 cars (eco not included) so they limit the weight to a figure to guarantee that when tested.

While I too would like to see more granularity in options, I wouldn't mind seeing a single limited type package with just everything on it. That means being able to get the fogs and 17" rims along with the HUD and sunroof. You think we could still get 50 MPG with everything thrown in? Spare included?

Although my biggest wish would be for Toyota to learn from Tesla and focus on making a Smart car. Not a tiny small car, but think Smart as in Smart phones. Something that gains capabilities through free and frequent upgrades. If there's something it can't do today, such as Car Play or android Play, perhaps it could learn to do it in the future. That way there's more desire to hold on to them longer.

 

agreed, but 'right' is different for everyone. i'll be happy with another 10 miles of real world ev, on top of everything we know about the lift back. are there other things on my wish list? you bet, but i don't have a tesla parked in my garage.

Bisque, Can you elaborate on the steering stops issue? I would think you can just swap the tires and it should be fine, since the overall diameter should be the same. I've heard that the turning radius on the 17" equipped car is greater. Is this a steering rack adjustment, and if so why was that done? I'm thinking about a 3 Touring, but I for one don't want 17" wheels. I'd swap for 15s.

 

Bisque can no doubt elaborate further but I believe that the essence of it is:

• The tires on the 15" rims and on the 17" rims have almost exactly the same outside diameter
• The tires on the 17" rims are wider
• As the 17" tires are wider and the same diameter, you can't turn them as far within the same size wheel well
• For this reason they design and set the steering for models with the 17" tires so that the tires can't be turned quite as far and thus the turning circle is a bit wider.
• If you change from 15" to 17" wheels and tires without changing the stop position then the tires may hit the side of the wheel well under some conditions. Even if this does not occur in normal driving, it may still occur when you are turning as sharply as you can and you hit a bump or have chains on.

 

Well, I hope you get one of those parked in your garage one of these days. Once the giga factory comes on line, I think they will be much more affordable.

On a side note, I'm looking forward to test driving the new 2016 Prius.
