How many miles can 1 tank go?

Maybe refill with a comfortable buffer, see how much it takes, then extrapolate to the full tank.

Testing the limits is never my cup of tea, I fill up when it's below half and passing by my preferred gas station brand.

 

I would like to know how much gas you can get in it when light starts blinking, although this may not suit everyone, we need to know

 

i would refill at 700 miles. let us know when the last bar starts flashing. or what the gen4 does to notify you that you're low.
is 11.3 the same as gen3? i thought they held 12.

 

the light blinks with about 2 gallons left in the tank. unless gen 4 is different. what does the manual say?

 

There are those like me who had the ~100 miles after the beep rule of thumb on the Gen2 (which never failed me BTW, and I would be disappointed if I didn't fill in at least 9 gallons -- Gen2 bladder problems notwithstanding ). The latest one is a full bladder less 12 gallons as per the manual IIRC.

Edit: it's part of the battery mid screen like the v ain't it? But does it also have a linear regen display like the Gen 3 liftback? I find Gen 3 liftback do much easier to P&G and regen light to light compared to the v..

 

This is not the kind of testing for the faint of heart but I've run our 2010 Prius out of gas about 6-7 times on purpose:

The earlier model cars, Gen-1 and Gen-2, do the right thing by giving an abundance of alerts and alarms when the last of the gas is burned. In contrast, the Gen-3 silently switches to traction battery and gives no alarm.

IMHO, the lack of a driver alarm makes it difficult to use the remaining traction battery energy to reach a safe parking place. There are many reports of Gen-1 and Gen-2 drivers who used their traction battery energy to get out of traffic and in some cases, reach a gas station. There is a very subtle clue with the Gen-3.

With a spare, 1 gallon can of gas, I found that the energy flow arrows disappear when the last of the gas is gone. Use the display showing power flow between the engine, motor, and battery. In one case, I used the traction battery energy to go just under 1/2 mile to a residential street where I added the spare gallon.

The reason for multiple tests were to confirm the amount of gas remaining after 'flash', 2.1 gallons, and the absolute amount of fuel in the tank, 12.1-12.2 gallons.

Take Caution and carry a 3-5 gallon gas can. You newer Gen cars will need a minimum of 3 gallons to start the car after going dry. A PC member had to jump on the car with 3 gallons to reset the sensor in order to start the car.

My friend with a 2014 ran out of gas, she only put a gallon, it would not start and had to get it towed to the dealer, they added 2 more gallons and it started right up. She was not happy. So be warned.

The key is to measure MPG over a 10 mile distance, either a loop or two runs in opposite directions, at a fixed speed. With the 2016 you can get more accuracy especially at the lower speeds. The normal low-speed limit for our Gen-3 is 23 mph but that is not reliable due to bumps. Getting the MPG from 25 mph up would help us understand how much improved the Gen-4 is over the Gen-3:

Toyota Ebrochure says 11.3 gal. for fuel tank. Based on last 4 days mystery math says 610 for the blink 680 max.

or you could test the max range like this guy. West coast to West Texas working vacation with 3 little ones in Grandma's borrowed Prius. 113f to frost. About 5 minutes for clip in nowhere West Texas.

 

If that turns out to be the case, the 680 miles and 11.3 US gallons, that works out to 60 mpg, 3.9 liters per 100 km.

That would be astounding; all things considered. I'm somewhat incredulous, but it'll be interesting to see how it works out, with some time, Fuelly establishing a 2016 Prius category and more reports.

 

i'm sure people will find a way to get 39 mpg.

A new Gen4 owner ought to start that. Having moved on to a longer range plug-in, F8L is an irregular here now and hasn't visited in five months.
