    Hi All,

Ive made this thread so we can all share our opinions on the 4th Gen as a sleeper/camper road trip car.

So from the picture i have seen so far it seems that the new 4th Gen Prius has done away with the Flat Cargo Floor, which to me is quite a draw back since i wanted to get the Prius so i can use it as a Camper/sleep road trip car like many others you can find on google, but waited a year to get the 4th Gen.

To my dismay i see in some of the pictures/videos that now they have done away the flat cargo floor with the 60/40 split seats...

Some one on the thread has said that there is 2 versions to this Model and one of them is showing a flat cargo space....is this false hope or an actually possibility? if any of you have pics to fallow your information please do share.

All Your Opinions Are Greatly Appreciated.

    1. All cars on display in Las Vegas had the 60/40 folding rear seats.
    2. Prii with NiMh batteries have a cargo floor that is flush with the rear seats when folded.
    3. Prii with LiOn batteries have a cargo floor that is not flush with the rear seats when folded. The floor is lower.
If you should happen to buy a Gen4 with LiOn batteries, you will want to find a way to fill the difference in floor height. I would suggest some sort of elevation structure. This would not only serve to match the folded back seats but might also provide a little bit of under-floor storage for things that can fold flat (about 3 - 4 inches).

    Hey Tony,

I have been thinking of ideas to raise the floor height, i came across some one suggesting styrofoam but i dont think im a big fan of styrofoam mainly because its so environmentally taxing and it dents from the Styrofoam that i know of,probably doesn't last a long time... do you have any suggestions?

how about latex foam, easy to roll up when not using. there is another thread where someone said they had an idea, but i haven't seen them repost.

    Hey bisco,

Thanks for your interest in this topic.
I will explore that idea and see if it works, from just the top of my head, latex foam sinks when you lay on it which might cause quite a difference between the floor heights, i was thinking something sturdy so that its flush and then add something on top of that for cushioning if need be.

Any and all suggestions/ideas are very welcomed.
    Thanks in advance.

agreed. it's a tricky situation, and more than a few people are interested. i'm surprised this thread got lost, but maybe there will be more ideas as the cars hit the roadis it only the two, four and four touring that have the lowered floor?

Yes considering how many people use the previous prius to camp and do cross country tours in it, praising it etc, it is surprising.
I hope it gets more exposure so that we can get some great ideas and contribute to a better experience with the new prius for everyone.

They tend to take shape of the floor, unless its a really sturdy air matters, but even then, it will be on a slope because of the drop from the back seats, i imagine.

yes, i'm thinking whatever you use, start at the base of the folded rear seat.

what do you sleep on now?

I don't think a regular third gen Prius is really long enough to stretch out in the back, it's signif under 6 feet clear with the seats down, maybe 5'-10" at most? I'd doubt 4th gen Prius would have any more. Prius v is better in this regard I think.

With 4th gen Prius with level hatch threshold, do the seats lie flat? I heard something counter to that, but maybe it was relating to the model with dropped floor?

Ethafoam would be fine to level the floor. It's the (usually) white foam that you can compress and it returns to shape. It's also fine to sleep on. Used as foam "holder" inside boxes for complex "stuff". You can buy it in sheets, 1/8",1/4", 1/2", 1", and 2". Try camping gear manufacturers or concrete specialty places. Not cheap, but it lasts forever. Easy to recycle as it's polyethylene. It's closed cell so won't absorb water. The really thin stuff is used to wrap things they don't want the paint damaged on during shipping. You can get it at shippers supply places. Two pieces would level a 4" step, and you could use them to sleep on if you put up a tent.

Yes you can actually with the 3rd gen people over 6 foot tall can sleep in it, comfortably, there are lots of blogs about it, some guy was pretty tall and he just put the front seats all the way forward and in between the space of the front seats and back seats he put some material, which looked very easy and all sorts of material can be used, like a bucket, or luggage etc....there was a guy that even managed to sleep in a prius c that was over 6 foot tall :)

I really enjoy the idea that one can sleep in his car with out having to worry about inclement weather, wild life etc it opens up the horizon as to where in the world one can go and camp and feel safer.

Also i read online somewhere that the prius keeps the temperature in the car at what ever temp you set it to while you sleep, and then when the battery runs out of juice from keeping you warm/cool it turns on by its self while you sleep recharges the battery and turns off.
Not sure how that works yet as i have not tried it my self its a nice little added feature, not necessary but quite nice :) if it can be done.

The places ive seen people sleeping in the prius is quite alluring(sleeps 2 people).

Thanks for the interest, lets keep this thread going and we might be able to find really good info for camping with the 2016 Prius

Cheers and Happy New Year :)
