    there is definitely an element here, where it's all about the money. and those are some of the ones who come and go with gas price. this is a hurdle to be overcome be alt fuel vehicles.

    From the last 10 years, it appears hybrids have plateaued between 3-4%.
    I'm hoping the reported nicer quality drive of the Prius will help hybrids break out of that. If not, I expect EVs to surpass hybrids in 5-7 years (in the U.S.).

    I may have to fly to California to buy a Two Eco and then drive it home? KOOL!

    Our first 2003 Prius, which I still drive, was bought in Fort Worth Texas and driven 800 miles back to Huntsville AL. But I do insist on getting or waiting for TSS(P). Hummmm, I could drive the 03 Prius to California . . .

    As for a full-size spare, I have no problem with bringing a full-size wheel as my checked luggage . . . and a carry-on with several days of underwear, shaver, and deodorant. Then ask the dealer to throw in a tire or at least the mounting . . . <GRINS>

    So what do you say @DianneWhitmire: Two Eco with TSS(P) and you' all throw in a tire mounted on a 15" wheel?

    you'll be in an exclusive club!;) if i were in the market for a prius, i would love the 58 mpg's, but not the way they got there. i don't think i could take those tyres, from what i've heard so far.

    i'd rather hyper mile my way to 75 mpg's in a II, III or IV. but it will be a pip for me most likely, and i'll be expecting 80.:)

    I think these numbers are too pessimistic!
    Even test drivers who didn't even try to get good fuel economy easily got over 60 mpg !

    I can't believe that the small weight reduction in the Prius Eco would explain its huge MPG improvement over the Prius non-Eco models. I doubt the little Li-ion battery has anything do with it either. The tires should make no difference in the EPA tests, and it can't be aerodynamics, as city MPG is also hugely improved.

    Therefore, I can't think of anything other than a different CVT-transmission programming for the Prius ECO.

    Any thoughts?

    Super expensive eco tyres? The li-ion battery being more heavily utilised? The li-ion batteries used in the PIP do seem to offer better mpg's compared to the NiMh in the existing Prius (when the PIP is not plugged in of course).

    Perhaps they have restricted performance a little?

    So with regards to mpg on the 2016 Prius. On our 2010 Prius the mpg readout is always over stating mpg indicated. Last fillup it was off by over 4 mpg and normally always off by at least 3 mpg, for instance 51 indicated was actually 47 mpg by miles divided by gallons used. So does the 2016 have the same issue in mpg readout being over stated.

    I heard it's FINALLY spot-on, or slightly pessimistic. Forget where, maybe Wayne Gerdes (cleanmpg) test drive?

    I hadn't studied the number inasmuch as I am not in the market. But I tend to agree with disco. Interestingly, the reported fuel efficiency numbers for the non-ECO, are really not that much of an improvement over the G3. If I were in the market for a new Prius, which I am not, I would consider looking for a new 2015.

    reportedly, the gen IV epa number is the easiest to beat in actual driving, of any prius to date. even from anti prius writers.

    The specific gravity of gasoline (and therefore it's weight) can vary with it's composition but a good ballpark figure is 6.5 pounds per gallon. Using this weight, the quoted capacity of the 2016 Prius gas tank at 11.4 gallons can hold a difference of 74.1 pounds between full and empty. How much effect on MPG's is there from just filling your fuel tank? Keep in mind that the 4T model is listed at 3080 pounds. Is that full, empty, or somewhere in between?
