...re: hardware issue - sometimes the battery cooling fan is clogged and this is something that should be checked once in a while, especially pets/dogs in the back seat is a known issue, as the hair builds up whereas the fan intake is adjacent to the passenger side rear seat by the door. I have not checked mine to be honest but maybe I should as we have grandkids back there all the time now. This is not an easy DIY item but some folks check it themselves.

There is a good (but fast) YouTube on how to perform this DIY. We don't have any pets or as I said, seldon anything but perhaps a suitcase or a bag of groceries back there. The whole car had a sort of green fungus growth when I bought it, It's too late NOW, but it's a days project that you could do & in hindsight, I wish I had. I don't suppose it's something the dealer's service department checked...

    Wait, what?

Was this car in a flood? Submerged in water?

You know, I don't think so. The upholstery was dirty but no moldy or musty. The plastic areas (dash, doors, etc) were just 'fuzzy' kind of like a bad flocking job if you were ever in to that craft! VABch and the rest of the Tidewater area does flood - but it looked more like just being shut up in high humidity. Here are some photos that I took but they don't show as much as I wish they did. I walked away from the car b/c it was a bit disgusting! 2014-03-05 12.47.46.jpg 2014-03-05 12.47.53.jpg

...well it cannot be good for the battery terminals could be corroded although Gen2 they have treated the terminals better to prevent that. But a visual inspection of the battery (requires some advanced DIY) to see if there could be something going on.

Exactly! It was a mess but he 'liked us so well', he called to accept my (lowball?) offer. In hind sight, I guess I paid too much! But it's a great little car with all the features I wanted at 1/3 of what I was ready to pay for a compromise (but new) car.

I guess I was being overly optimistic when I dropped it off at the dealer to be 'checked out'. It was still under warranty for several thousand more miles and they pronounced it fine.

Yep - got another day... Still don't know a car I want more... But I want more for my money than a car worth a pittance with a one year guarantee. If I lived nearer an urban area where I could get service from a fairly reliable dealer, I get it fixed for $2K (or less) with a 2 year warranty.

is there an auto parts store that carries the foeman rebuilt battery? they get the best reviews for warranty service. but you have to find someone to install it, unless the dealer will.

Finding someone to install it is the issue...

There's that 'driveway service' from DC but I want to hear some recommendations... Prius Hybrid Battery

Here's one just 50 miles away that seems to be more legitimate - a mom & pop shop? I need to hear more: SAE-certified hybrid/electric vehicle services

I'll explore more after I feel I need to if Toyota doesn't come through...

you can't. doorman is the only nation wide product, and even they have troubles. as i said it's more important to know how they handle warranty service (because you'll most likely need it) than it is to know how good their batteries are. (because you can't know) ask them for references you can contact?

MACs in Ashland VA was an original Dorman installer back when it was Re-Involt. He might at least give you a hint where to get it fixed.

OK - that's what I'll do but I still Have my fingers crossed for Toyota. I'm not optimistic though: they just want to know if I want a new or used car next!

that's not toyota, that's the dealership. they are two separate companies, with a contractual obligation.

So is it the dealer who is the 'decider'??? If so, I might as well get busy now finding the replacemnt. I hav a friend with a salavage yard who will give my $1K but said he could get more than that as is from some used car salesmen he knows if I just want to be done with it and head to Hyundai for a clean deal... or Honda? VW? I'd still kind of like to revive my Prius though... but there's a limit to the cost of loyalty...

Talked to Jim at MAC's in Ashland. What a great guy! First time I've felt good about near anything since Saturday when the dash lit up!

no. you have to call toyota customer service. number's in your manual. they are the final arbiter. if they contribute to the cause, you get a reduced cost at the dealer.
