Windows 10 -- Anyone bite?

So far I'm having problems with my HP printer not connecting and can't wirelessly transfer files between my phone and my PC via wifi. Both used to work on my XP. It's sad that now I have to email my printer in order for it to print.

 

Oh heck, my dumped and not missed HP printer routinely got lost with win7.

 

I went ahead and upgraded my laptop to Windows 10. So far so good. Keeping my desktop on 7 in case of any incompatibilities. I'm shocked 10 is no slower than 7. The only thing that really annoys me is the volume slider. It's horizontal instead of vertical. I'm sure this was changed for the touchscreen crowd. I'm having a hard time adjusting to it.

 

I have no problems with the volume slider. I click on the volume icon in the notification area and use the scroll wheel to adjust the volume. The mouse can hover anywhere on the screen to scroll though the volume setting. What I don't like about the volume setting is that in the mixer mode, I have to hover my mouse over the volume slide bar in order to use the scroll wheel the adjust the volume.

Now to more of my rant. I am absolutely hating the user accounts. Why do I need administrator permission to copy, move or delete a file when my user account already has administrator rights? If I want to disable the warning, I have to disable user account control. But then all the metro apps won't work anymore. Why do MS create an administrator account if it's disable by default? Is this about jacking the public for more money for support?
Let's make all users create user accounts regardless if they're the sole operators of their own PC and lock everything down but give their user account fake administrator rights. Now we'll wait til they get tired of the pop ups and call support so we can charge the hell out of them. Little do they know that this dick move only create tons of backlash amongst the tech community.
I'll be enabling the Administrator account and using it from now on.

 

^^^ I think this was changed starting with Vista due to malware. Malware would change certain system properties like adding deleting user rights. Because you with admin rights was logged in, it would be done seamlessly. Now these types of changes have a pop up to notify you and if it's a critical change, you need to input your password again.

 

Note for Windows 10 users: safe mode is not in the boot options by default.. If you place safe mode in the boot options, your operating system start up time may increase-that is how windows 10 starts up as fast or faster than previous Windows. You can get into safe mode by the following key combinations if you do not want to add safe mode to the boot options (if Windows 10 start but does not work properly when booted):
Use the Shift + Restart combination. Another way of getting into Safe Mode in Windows 10 is to use the Shift + Restart combination. Open the Start menu and click or tap on the Power button. Then, while keeping the Shift key pressed, click or tap on Restart.

If you are attempting to upgrade from windows xp to windows 10 you are upgrading thru 4 different operating systems and there is not a really 'upgrade' from XP to Windows 10. If is far easier to back up your data, and do a complete new install of Windows 10-everything will be cleaner. You can 'upgrade' from windows 7, 8, 8.1 to Windows 10-they share a common core kernel, however, Windows XP is a different kernel.

 

David, regarding a clean install of windows 10, what's the actual steps of that process: you download the Windows 10 install packet and transfer to a (boot capable) DVD? And this could hopefully be used on two computers (with legit Win7 installed)?

I finally found something Win 10 does better than Win 7.

I have a Zebra label printer I need to share with 2 other PCs.
In Win 7 the host PC retained the shape of the ticket and the parameters about how to align with the marks on the back, but the networked PC did not. They needed that info re-entered each time you entered the program.
Win 10 retains that info even on the remote PCs, greatly simplifying my box office.

It is not much, but it is the only improvement I have found.

 

Whenever I've done a (fresh) reinstall, it's at least a half day's concerted effort, and then the next few days are a litany of "oh yeah, that" moments. Good to know there's some reason for it, lol.

 

I'm late for work but I'll show you guys the steps I took to install windows 10 for free and activated.

 

I'm a web and app developer using a number of "legacy" programs and worried that an upgrade might prove problematic.

Having endured the Win taskbar notice and error prompts for "GWXUX has stopped working" I decided to upgrade from Win7 to Win10.

The upgrade couldn't have been easier; I started the download, executed the update once prompted, then (with crossed fingers), walked away from the box.

Hours later, a restart displayed the Win10 screen. After login, Win10 asked me to "turn on" a dozen or so Microsoft functions (including making the new browser "Edge" default. I declined ALL.

After a week, the only headaches have been picking a Win10 theme and configuring my preferred Firefox browser (tab colors remain a problem which may be resolved soon.)

All legacy programs remained functional.

Win10 seems to be faster in displaying web pages.

Here are the steps I took to install legitimate windows 10 Pro for free and activated. This is a clean install straight from Microsoft. This is not pirated or warez.
Download and install media creation tool from Windows 10
Note, DO NOT use the "Upgrade Now" button. Scroll down and click on the "Download tool now"
Run the MediaCreationTool.exe Click on "Create installation media for another PC"
I chose English, Windows 10 Pro, Both. The N edition does not include any media viewing apps to conform with European laws.
Create your own ISO or USB media. I used a 16GB USB 3.0 thumb drive. I created both and tested both types of media. The USB installs much faster than the DVD ISO.
During installation, use Advance option so you can format the hard drive to do a clean install. Skip the product key, skip the MS account, setup your preference and skip another product key.
Once it'd done installing and booted to Win 10, go to the notification icon and click on All Settings then click on Update & Security.
Do a Windows Update. It'll list everything that needs to update including the newest version of Windows 10. Current build is 1511 (10.0.10586.3)
This may take up to a couple of hours. depending on your internet speed and processor and harddrive speed.
Once everything's updated, goto your file explorer and check the C drive's properties. It should be somewhere around 25GB.
Click on "Disk Cleanup" and check all the boxes. This will delete the Windows 10 setup files, almost 4GB, and the first Windows 10 installation from the USB or the DVD ISO.
One the C drive is cleaned up, you're back down to around 13-14GB.
Go to the notification icon and click on All Settings then click on Update & Security then Activation. It should show "Windows is activated"
Hope this helps. Also I don't know how long this method will work. Maybe til Windows 10 is no longer free.

 

The only problems I always have with windows upgrades (going all the way back to Windows 98) is the compatibility to vendor software programs I have to use for my business. The programs always take over a year to catch up to windows, therefore, the upgrade is completely useless for me until then.

 

You can always use virtualbox to run older OS so you can run older software. A prime example is Toyota's Techstream. It's 32bit only. Almost all modern laptops are 64bits now. I use Virtualbox to run Windows XP 32bit so I can use Techstream.

 

I've been a PC user my whole life because I always preferred windows to apple's operating system. That being said I feel like every time they update their operating system it just becomes more and more complicated. My brother has Windows 10 and I can't stand using his computer. I'll probably buy a refurbished mac next time.

 

I noticed a computer store ad in a local free paper. They offer a HP system, with either Windows 7 or 10. Two thoughts, largely rhetorical:

1. Why still Win 7?
2. What happened to Win 8, aka Vista?

 

Vista was before 7, and nobody seemed to like 8.

 

If MS wants to push metro on us, they should have migrated to metro slowly. They should have released windows 10 first and call it windows 8 then windows 8.1 then windows 8 and call it windows 10. Personally I like windows 10 better than 8.1, even with classic she'll.

 

Wonder what would happen if a serious wack of win 7 users sit tight, refuse to upgrade?
