No TPMS? Canadian version

Common sense says that the car should be able to at least store the IDs for 9 sensors - four summer, four winter and a spare. That would eliminate 90% of the issues that people have with them.

Alternatively, a user-programmable means of resetting the IDs such as the one implemented on the Chevy Volt would really useful.

 

I've read its only the asian built cars that require ECU programing of TPMS IDs. NA built cars auto adjust. When I swap winter/summer tires on my Jeep, it relearns the IDs before any fault is indicated. I like that Toyotas provides a set point capability (reset), however. For most other cars, the target psi is factory programmed and not adjustable.

 

European countries have a requirement that the sensors can be disabled by the owner, same with DRLs. Presumably to encourage winter/snow tire usage. Most car companies do this by timing out the warning light after so many hours or miles. Cars built for the US won't have the disable feature. do not know what Canada requires.

 

High end Toyota vehicles support two sets of TPMS sensors. The extra cost is a switch to select which set is active.

The TPMS light started blinking again for a minute and then stays lit. Will it turn off again in the coming weeks? Still too early to tell if this is a repeatable pattern or some kind of malfunction.

 

Cold weather. If you check the tire pressures, I'm sure you'll find at least one tire low. Top them all off (including the spare), and check them again when it warms up.
