Source: 2016 Chevrolet Volt Named Green Car of the Year | TheDetroitBureau.com The Volt knocked down an impressive list of competitors that included the new, fourth-generation 2016 Toyota Prius, the world’s best-selling hybrid-electric vehicle. “This is certainly something special,” proclaimed Steve Mojoras, Chevy’s marketing manager, after accepting the crystal trophy at the L.A. Auto Show event. “This is a hard market to crack. This is the Super Bowl of green car awards, so it adds instant validation.” I could not resist posting a comment: Wilson says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. at The true name of this award is “Anything Not a Prius.” The award history is the ‘kiss of death’ because so many earlier winners have all but died in the market. The “Green Car of the Year” has the credibility of “Clean Diesel” . . . an earlier award winner. Customers are voting with their wallets and the Prius continues to dominate. Bob Wilson, Huntsville, AL I don't like this 'invented' award because it has such a miserable track record. It gets free but unearned press. There are credible awards and even Consumer Reports has after nearly a decade, reluctantly realized the Prius is popular with their customers, their readers, in spite of a history of slanted reporting (i.e., the CR 'score' is bogus.) But this award has been and remains worse than nonsense. Bob Wilson ps. Now that I'm not spitting and smoke is not coming out of my ears, I will pursue a different approach. It will be based upon: (1) assumptions about what journalism ethics and responsibilities, (2) pointing out the date of the press test drives, November 9, and embargo date November 18, and (3) absence of any empirical metrics. They have their hung their *sses out and though mean, it is time to whack them with a clue-by-four.
funny stuff. gm still loves patting themselves on the back, yet fails to crack the market to any reasonable degree.
Well when your livelihood (Austrailian 'brown'? coal) is part of the Mirai, why not give it an award. <sarcasm>. (Many more articles about this when googling) Could it be more obvious? Seriously, how can these vehicles (Volt and Mirai) even make a dent in the greenness when they sell so few? Awards mean exactly d#$k if u cant get people 'on the wagon'.
i didn't think censors would allow the short name of richard to go thru. thus the #$ substitute letters.
So it used to be anti-4x4 and anti-VW...now it's anti-Volt and Mirai. Are you folks listening to yourselves?
nope, just anti-stupid awards. "oooh, look at us, we won an award." and when these silly awards don't help sell cars, ya got to wonder why? maybe the cars ain't what people want? maybe the cars really didn't deserve the 'award'? maybe the awards are distractions from what's really happening? could be many things.
I don't know...awards or not, anti is anti...remember all the anti-Prius, anti-EV. Something about the pot calling the kettle black comes to mind.
Well here is an opportunity: What testing was done to compare the 2016 Prius to the 2016 Volt? In contrast, Edmunds did the 'Smackdown' series with 4-5 cars driving the same three routes between San Diego and Las Vegas. The key is Edmunds actually put hands on cars and compared them in similar conditions. Nothing like this was done for this false award. In effect, he has crowned himself the Czar of "Green" and picks his jury with no objective test or even hands-on vehicle requirement. Every other serious award has at least some list of criteria. This might as well be some guy on a sidewalk talking to the sky for all the credibility . . . and then we see Wards and other 'media' reporting him as someone of merit. He is not in this reality and those citing him are enabling the insanity. Bob Wilson
Green Car Journal (Group) does custom publishing. Y'know what that means? It means whatever somebody wants to pay for. Now why not just let them go about their business. Somebody has a pea under their mattress here...
That seems beside the point. Science good, people trying to make cars almost as good as Prius good, people whooping about such cars good. Where is the not good here?
the 'not good' is not designing a car more people would buy. which would make its purpose more effective, and so, undeserving of an award. i like the volt, and would even consider one. but just like the pip, it has a limited market.
I give Bob the "Debunking the Green Car of the Year Award". It's a new one I just made up. Full colour certificate is in the mail.
Well, now you have moved off. The beef(let) was with the GC award. do not know what is the great skill of designing a 'hit' car but it's true that not everyone has it. Honda Accord was the 2014 GCoY. Certainly a pinnacle of modern auto design/engineering, whether or not GC had picked it.
This ditch has been excavated deeply enough. The problem here is not that people slickly produce mis information or somewhat misleading information. That will not end in the foreseeable future. Nor would I wish to be in charge of 'the choosing'. The problem is that a broader audience lacks critical reasoning skills and adequate knowledge to separate grain from chaff. This is a problem everywhere, dang it. It will not end in the foreseeable future either. However it seems a more appropriate thing to try to fix than whacking moles. There are too many moles.
...and the point is what? They received an award or recognition from a questionable source...really? Ooooh...that's never happened before...and who cares? This crowd won't be swayed by such awards and we all know it. My point is why all the anti-every other car that was, is, or might be considered a threat...realistic, perceived or not. And even if you don't consider any as such, you're still spewing just like the anti-Prius and anti-EV crowd did past and current. Isn't PC above the same crap the others car forums were guilty of?
