    I've known the Gen III to be 50 combined Danny, 51/48/50.

    Besides fuel efficiency, power efficiency is just as important. Sounds like Gen4 would be more power efficient than even the Gen2.

    With Gen3, although it had 24 hp more with some weight gain, performance didn't feel like 20%.

    Prius had rating based on lower models, they had to prove to EPA that 17" version will get low amount of sales to get that. Quite possibly new one is not based on 15" version rating anymore but combined or based on larger wheel version? For other Toyota models, they show difference in MPG between different versions/models.

    They report fuel economy figures for different wheel sizes for ICE models in other markets. It isn't require by the EPA, though the manufacturer can choose to do so.

    Let's get a little perspective folks.

    In the Spring of 2005, I was on a dealer waiting list for a Prius and got a voice message 'First one with $1,000 gets the Prius that just arrived.' Dealers were charging and getting a markup equal to the tax credit. That is not todays Prius market.

    If you walked into a Toyots dealer with $1,000 bills pinned to your shirt, they could not sell a 2016 Prius.

    Personally I expect to live another 2-3 years and have two perfectly fine Prius in the driveway. Today's rumors are not worth the micro watts spent displaying them.

    I am patient and ancient because after all, my wife did not catch me 39 years ago because I had a Prius. She caught me because she knew I was bright enough to buy two when the price was right.

    Why on Earth would someone that is worried about top speed EVER be in the market for a Prius? The mpg at top speed SUCKS, and the top speed sucks compared to so many other cars.

    Yikes I hope the hp rating is a mistake, but then again hp isn't the most important measure.

    The gen IV's engine is reported to be 96 hp, pretty much a wash of the gen III's 98 hp. That would have the battery providing only a boost of 25 hp in the gen IV versus the 36 hp the gen III's battery provided. Maybe that is simply the ligher eco battery, but there is a version with more juice.

    I don't always get the epa
    Mpg thing. It used to be impossible to achieve but now a driver half paying attention can meet it. Heck many will take the Gen 4 and avg 60+ mpg. That's incredible. 2oz of gas per mile.

    Exactly. The EPA estimates are modeling typical American drivers.

    EV icon is lit at 69 mph - i.e ICE is off. That pretty much confirmed what we knew.

    Score at 29/100 is getting 48 MPG. That's very good. Imagine what you'll get at higher score.

    I'm guessing that score includes the previous drivers, as they seldom turn off the cars when running them through multiple drivers. And few of the press are interested in getting high mpg on their test drives.

    To be fair, if they handed me one right now, I'd stomp the piss out of it on the first day to see what the improved platform does for driving feel, and only on later days try to max the mpg. So if they had sent me there, where you simply don't have enough time to get a feel for the car, I would have been the typical mpg-killer.

    Well there will be an Eco option Prius,so maybe only the Eco model has 121 hp and that's why it's even more efficient than the "normal" gen. 4 Prius !?

    not really. Combined HP on Gen3 was 132 for a few seconds reduced further to 126 due to battery output restrictions. Gen4 increased transmission efficiency and possibly better ICE torque curve and overall power management more than capable to make up for lost 5hp. One thing for sure there won't be any significant gain in performance, just parity more or less.

    yes very interesting! Not knowing details, I'd say better heat management, better aero, taller gearing, bigger battery and more aggressive programming are possible suspects. And I don't see ECO in US being spec'ed out without spare.
