How many EV miles do you get after a full charge now?

    I do a similar drive but when my EV miles run out, the car starts using HV miles. Yes, I have to drive much more conservatively on those HV miles but the ICE doesn't come on. I can feel it when it does come on and if I drive conservatively it doesn't come on either by feel or by the ENERGY indicator on my MFD.

    What am I doing wrong? :LOL:

    That is what's supposed to happen.

    HV-mode is a mix of blending and electric-only driving.

    Yep, that's right! I get the regular 11 to 14 miles in EV mode and then I get additional electric only miles in HV mode if I drive very conservatively in HV/Eco mode. As, I stated in a different thread, I can almost double my my electric only miles. I got flamed for it in that thread and I expect to get flamed for it here. But I am telling you, once I use my EV miles, I can extend my electric miles further in HV with out the ICE coming on, either by sound, feel, or MFD ENERGY display.

    I am getting about 23 km (~14 miles) EV these days.
    @el Crucero - the best indicator (apart from feeling) for driving electric is the EV indicator (looks like a car icon), when it lit - you are driving using the battery. This indicator is not on the energy monitor screen but on the HSI screen of the MID (as well as some other screens).

    That doesn't make any sense. There isn't enough electricity available...

    EV-mode depletes SOC from 85% to 23.5%.

    HV-mode depletes SOC from 23.5% to 18%.

    Yes, I watch that too, I know what you are talking about on the upper HSI. Plus, I watch the ENERGY screen on my Navigation MFD. They certainly appear to give the same feedback in sync.

    Yes, if one is real careful, one can keep the ICE from coming on when the system forces HV mode due to SOC depletion. But as John points out, once the SOC gets down to 18%, the ICE WILL come on. Now, if one is on a decline while in that HV mode, one could get a bunch of EV miles. Such elevation changes can be real subtle, and not at all visually apparent.That is why realistic measurements of EV range have to be a round trip over the same route, so elevation changes cancel out.

    The Prius may be great engineering, but it is not a perpetual motion machine.

    Provided the engine is warm when the system forces HV mode, but if the engine is warmed up the miles preceding the switch were not pure EV.

    Hmmm.. you're right. If the engine is cold, switching to HV mode unconditionally turns on the engine if it needs to warm up. As is the case when you first start a standard Prius, or when you first start a PiP when the battery is depleted,

    here we go again... i don't think you got flamed, i think it's a misunderstanding. and you refused to provide the screen shots requested.

    i think it's how you measure the data. if you reset evdr 1 or 2, and check it after you finish your drive, i think you'll find less ev miles than you thought. the computer doesn't count ev miles after you run out of plug in juice, unless you go down a large enough hill to regen back into the ev portion of the battery.

    btw, you can tell when the engine is on if you watch the instant mpg gauge.

    Sir, yes it does make sense, let me explain. In HV mode you can regenerate miles back into your SOC by using "pulse and glide" and while pulsing keeping the power bar on the HSI below half way. Try it you will like it!

    This technique is not going to work in all situations. It takes patience and diligence. I live in a smaller, rural town with few stoplights. At the stoplights I coast a long way to stop (regeneration) and gently accelerate, keeping the power bar below 50%. The guys in the four wheel drive pickups on a lift kit with faded "Bush/Cheney" stickers on the bumper always wave to me with one finger as they pass by me in a cloud of smoke. Then they slam on the brakes at the next stoplight at the last minute. I smile when I glide up behind them just as the light turns green. :ROFLMAO: I do it all on electric and my redneck amigos are getting 8 to 10 mpg! (y) :love:

    Yep, I have gentle "hills and dales" in my community, nothing severe but rolling and do regenerate miles in to the SOC.

    Yep, I watch the MPG gauge, the EV indicator on the HSI, and the ENERGY screen on the MFD. Amazingly, they are all in sync.

    I don't know what to say, mine doesn't seem to work that way - sometimes yes but not always. I do live in a relatively warm climate.

    yes, the ambient temp can be warm enough to keep the ice from firing.

    I think there is some confusion here. When you use pulse-and-glide, you are inherently using the ICE; the "pulse" uses the ICE, the "glide" is in EV mode. Doing "pulse and glide" completely in EV mode doesn't accomplish anything; due to losses in the system, you are not going to get back into the battery as much as you took out. "Pulse and glide" is a technique developed by Prius hypermilers to keep the ICE operating in its optimal efficiency range, and thus getting amazing mpg numbers. I thought we were talking about how far one can go without using the ICE, not how many EV mode miles one can accumulate on one charge, which is really just playing games with how that number is computed. And while going downhill obviously will increase the number of mile you can go in EV mode, that really doesn't mean anything.
