Gas pump - stop at 1st click?

First click for me, I will be paying via a discounted credit card, so what do I care if it is an odd amount.

 

D.O.: when it clicks off I'm done.

 

Our 2006 will not take any more gaso after the first click so no point trying...it just immediately clicks again,

 

Same as with all cars, first click - you're done. Less risk of damage to carbon canister and the rest of the system.

 

you can't put 'a few more gallons' in a prius. i round up to a nickel, dime or quarter.

I've had the pump stop short a few times, which messes up the tracking on Fuelly. So now I pump till it clicks off a second time just to be sure it didn't stop short.

 

It makes absolutely no difference what you do, as long as you do it the same every time. And preferably at the same pump.

 

Ultimately, it makes no difference what you do. Period.

Any variation cancels out, in two or three tanks.

 

I read another thread on here that said they could no long pump fuel because the pump keeps clicking off. The consensus was that the carbon canister was already ruined by overfilling. I have had my Prius for a few months and been doing it like my previous vehicles and packing as much as possible in the tank but no more. The first click and I'm done, why take the chance!

 

When it clicks, I'm done and it's always at the slowest rate the pump handle sets to. I pay cash and I don't mind having a little odd change in my pocket. At night any change goes into a big jar and every so often we roll the coins to treat ourselves to a small luxury with it (restaurant dinner, movie, Nice steak or XL shrimp for the bbq, etc.). As for the gas mileage, I look at trends over the months in the customized stats at fuelly. I don't let one tank bother me but two or three tanks in a row could indicate a problem.

 

Mine has a tendency to shut off prematurely, many gallons short of a fill. So I always check the pump's displayed gallons, and make sure it is close to the expected amount, before declaring 'Done!'.

 

There are times when the automatic fuel fill shutoff is premature. If obvious, I reseat the nozzle and let things go on. The cause is usually on me as I have failed to insert the nozzle correctly. But if the shut off seems right, I pull the nozzle and pay the man. I really don't care what the MPG is on a per tank basis, as others have said, it is the multi-tank trend that interests me.

 

I had the pump NOT stop automatically and I was spilling gas out the fill neck onto the ground. Scared me because of fears of damaging the carbon canister and other emission related parts, but the car has never thrown an error code and this happened last summer. Still keeping the fingers crossed.....
