Tesla launches Model X SUV with a focus on safety
Thought this was a joke at first, but its a real feature. Pretty cool. You can also take your hands off the wheel and foot off the accelerator so that you can use your other weapons to fight zombies, vampires, or mutants
Tesla Autopilot has gone live for select beta testers
OK, I don't think people that need to fight the zombies will have the money for this tech, but tony stark and bruce wayne would be supporters of Musk.

I hope DRIVING never stops being part of driving.

I get a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach when I read that passing another vehicle requires manually using the turn signal. As if that restores it's function as part of driving. Where's the fun in that?

There's definitely a line with the automation of the driving experience that I don't want to cross, even if it's possible.
Here's hoping I don't live long enough to see the driver made obsolete.

wouldn't that feature appeal more to the bunker mentality, big wheel pick up truck drivers?

You can always choose not to use it:p

Frankly, I would welcome it as long as the automation causes fewer accidents than humans do.
With the number of idiots I see texting, reading, etc., I expect that isn't too far off.

As for the Bio Weapon Defense setting, I love it. I'd probably use it anytime a diesel is in front of me.

At least that should increase the use of turn signals. I thought they became optional equipment that people don't buy.

Bruce had his autonomous car in Keaton's Batman. John Connor would not be a supporter.

Its an on/off feature. You can set radar cruise control and continue the argument with people in the car paying little attention to the road, but when you see or feel it going slow, tell the car to pass by using the signal .... or you can drive it as a conventional high powered luxury SUV. I'm sure more fun than a prius. The key here is automated safety for tired or distracted drivers, or in my mom's case old some times confused drivers, but the car is too expensive for her, maybe the model 3 though ;) Or it will trickle to things like the camry and corolla.

    That is the google pod.

    Freudian Slip?
" Cab" always choose not to use it?

Yep, when driving your own car becomes like riding in a cab, I've lived too long.

I realize these features are in their infancy and you can always choose to use them or not.
    I'm speculating forward.

My point remains the same. I enjoy driving, and optional or not, there is a line of automation of the driving process that drivers choice or not, I'd rather not cross.

To fear advancements because of what might happen if extrapolated out to the extreme is illogical.
You could use the same argument for not liking automatic braking, or even power windows.

And yes, it was a typo, should have been "can" not "cab".

I thought the self opening and closing front door was over the top.
I would much rather have the car audibly welcome me:cool:

that's a lot of hand wringing, towards a car with over 500hp & is speed governed down to "only" go 155mph. but i hear ya

You can really tell that Mr. Musk is not satisfied with just making a great electric car - he wants to make a car greater than anything period. And then there's that whole, "free fuel for ever" thing. Mmmmm...... decisions decisions - and did you get a look of that pano-windshield?

No but I know two people with small businesses that have deposits down. They want to use the X as delivery vehicle/airport pick/image for their business.

I'll probably lease a plug-in for 3 years so I can buy a model 3 when its out. Although if we have a good stock market recovery at the end of the year I might get a model S 70D. The model S is too nice to park some places I park, and more hauling my dog. Then again I might buy a friends old tacoma truck for those times and more up to a tesla soon. I do want that biohazard protection button.

Have a used 2007 Camry Hybrid for sale, not a single biohazard problem yet after over 125,000 miles. Foolproof it must be

The filter protects you from biological weapons outside the car. Say ebola or anthrax or those nasty things that cause zombieism. I know I know, there hasn't been a zombie attack in the US in the last 40 years, but if one happens, drivers of the model X can be safe in there cars.

He also knows how to introduce a vehicle. Whoever was responsible for the Prius unveiling needs to watch the video.

I was at the Model X intro thanks to a friend who has a deposit on getting one and thus had an invitation from Tesla to attend.

It was quite a good show once it finally started. With hundreds of Tesla owners there, I was wondering what the collective net worth of the building was. Google co-founder Sergey Brin was said to be there and of course Musk himself. I'm guessing at least $50B.

Later, we all got a chance for a test ride in a section of the parking lot and down a private alley along the building. Three of the five cars were Ludicrous Mode enabled so we got the "0-60 in 3.2 seconds in a minivan" experience.

Every aspect of the car seems to have been carefully considered. It felt like we are (finally!) making progress toward the future George Jetson world of jet packs and flying cars.

Note the difference (reduction) in ambient sound as Elon enters the X and the car closes the door (approx. 13:00 min). It's as if he went into a bank vault. At one point, you can actually hear the show producer via IFB talking to him in his ear piece. WOW, that's quiet.o_O

That bank vault description - perfect!

I'm looking forward to feeling how comfy the back seats are

That white leather looks mighty slick ... but a pig like me ... it'd be looking crusty in no time.
