Gen 4 Staff Manual (In Japanese) =/ Specs/Design/Other Info

    I think battery weight difference is 10kg.

    S and A 4WD both NiMh but 10kg difference. However, S 2WD (NiMh) weights the same as A 2WD (Li-ion).

    It would be interesting to know how curb weight is defined in Japan .
    In Germany/EU curb weight means the car has to have alle necessary fluids filled at 100 %, a 90% filled up fuel tank and a imaginary 75 kg. driver .
    In other words it has to be a ready to drive car !

    Although the Gen3 battery power's factory spec. is 27kW,
    it seems to be limited lower in ECU program,
    Argonne National Laboratory's dynamometer testing showed a 22kW Max. in Gen3

    So ... the actual performance of Gen4 may not be that "poor" with efficiency improved.

    There are two values which can be monitored with Torque telling the maximum battery power allowed to be used based on temperature and SOC. Maximum values in optimal conditions are 22 kw for discharging and 25 kw for recharging.

    The green model with the special heat reflective paint looks interesting. I wonder if it will be available in the USA?

    They at least could have used a more attractive colour like silver ,blue or red !

    It is not only battery weight, but also...
    • fuel tank size is 38 liters instead of 43 liters on other grades
    • washer water tank size is 2.0 liters instead of 4.8 liters on other grades
    • no tonneau cover in trunk space
    • no rear wiper
    • no height adjust on front seats
    • no rear stabilizer
    • lack of some others
    to set the vehicle weight not to exceed 1310kg limit, which is a magic number on the JP JC08 mode test.

    The manual shows a small illustration of AWD system, but no detail.
    It says the rear motor power is not strong and the AWD system works only on slow speed.
    So, don't expect the AWD ability too much.

    Well in that case,despite how good fuel economy is,I don't see the Eco model selling very well !
    To many compromises !

    In Japan, the vehicle weight includes full of fuel, oil and water, but no passenger.
    The gross vehicle weight is vehicle weight plus 55kg X number of max passengers.

    I have noticed the NikkeiBP's article reported ICE Max. power = 72kW,
    although this seems to be a minor problem.

    Please don't get me wrong,but when I take german standards to determine curb weight in perspektive the only Prius model what has really lost weight would be the Eco model and not by very much .
    About 60 Kg !
    The normal 2WD models would be more or less the same,not really worth mentioning -10 Kg less weight then current and the 4WD models would have even significantly increased weight !
    To me that doesn't quite sound as Toyota has promised and let's be honest here,the compromises which come with the Eco model won't make it a bestseller !

    Why would you take EU gen3 number and try to calculate gen4 number under EU standards, and from there figure out the weight saving?

    Why not just take Japan gen3 weight - Japan gen4 weight = differnece that should be the same in EU

    Well because the curb weight in Germany of a fully loaded gen. 3 Prius is 1445 Kilos and that is with an imaginary 75 Kg driver included,so that means without driver it would come down to 1370 Kg .
    That's about 60 Kilograms above the new P4 Eco model but considering the 2WD models,and remember in Japan they don't include a 75 kg driver to determine curb weight,the weight only would come down by about 10 Kg !
    1360 kg Japan without driver included=1435 kg curb weight Germany with driver included !
    Current Prius 1445,new Prius 1435 .

    E grade may be specially trimmed to Japan and maybe successful there. may not be that spartan in other markets.

    I know, but you must also know that weight number under EU is also cheated, don't ask me how this is done but those numbers are not real weight numbers. :)

    YMMV...and that's why manufacturers are aiming to the test cycles. E is aiming to the JC08

    Yes maybe,but not by so much and they would get problems selling cars here,because the owner needs to know the weight of the car so there's no danger of overloading !
    I remember a member of German version of Priuschat going to a local civic waste collection point .
    He had to go over a weighing scale .
    He said the weight was more or less the same as stated .
    Why don't you give it a try and compare with US current specs and take in perspektive how curb weight is measured in the US !
    Should be interesting !

    It seems the main reason for weight reduction is to put the car in a different, more favourable category for mpg testing? Some of the above list seem reasonable deductions, some definitely not. No height adjustment of seats for example: I think that would cripple sales. If they actually care about selling these...
